Good article, I thought the same about 2006, more on football terms as he pretty much dragged England to the Quarter finals on his own, along with Crouch…in yet another tournament where Gerrard & Lampard were dismal. But the WAG angle could have made a good episode to complement it.
Disagree a bit with the US only focussed on the Donovan as I thought they covered that part quite well.

The notion of it being a one horse race is nonsense when you consider the amount of David vs Goliath occasions that occur, as in two out of three years Lille and Lens pushed PSG all the way despite the ridiculous disparity in resources. When Lens defeated PSG last year it looked as if they could do it, but it was the competitiveness of the teams around them like Marseille who ultimately stopped

Even if you ignore PSG, the competitiveness around the ‘best of the rest’ is phenomenal, as they seem to offer up a different top three every year.
With 11 different sides qualifying for the CL since the now relegated Bordeaux did so in 2010!

I visited Lambert Park during Easter 2021 for a game with Marconi and it was a fantastic experience. Location of the ground is perfect, close enough to restaurants & bars along Norton Street and breweries in Marickville.
If they could somehow redevelop the stands and sort out some parking for high profile matches it’s the perfect location to host top level football.

You make a good point here. I’m irritated with Optus as they’ve removed the Optus channels from Fetch TV. Meaning you cannot record, pause, rewind etc as it’s all streaming now.
This is an intangible disadvantage that is similar to what you’ve described with FOXTEL

Interesting points, but I am a Victory fan, and a club of this level, should be able to raise its game against City, Adelaide, WSW and Sydney as these are “bread and butter” rivalries.
Regardless of the fact that Victory have the most enemies in the league, and teams who raise their game when facing them…they should be better than this!

Western United are what they are but South Melbourne have basically made themselves look pathetic. We all want to see a club like South Melbourne back at the top of the Australian game but acting petty is not that way to do it.

I disagree with some of your points about the Bulls, my sense is they’ve been much more of a success and at least they represent (and play in) a specific area, although not being Sydney based, maybe I’m oblivious to the issues with the fans.

Western United not playing in the West is a huge contradiction and they should have negotiated with The Knights, Munich helped out Dortmund when they went under but the short sited ness of Australian clubs is unbelievable. WU, Knights, South all helping each other will only make the rivalry more interesting rather than trying to put each other out of business.

Great info, I’ve tried to follow the TAS and WA league this year on YouTube, and there has been some great drama unfolding with the collapse of Floreat and Devonport after having decent leads. Last time I looked Adelaide City looked high and dry so was surprised to see from you that they have also collapsed.
These NPL leagues are great as it really hard to sustain a lead and momentum is so important.
