Seriously? You don’t follow women’s cricket do you?

Starc flops and Carey shines in Sheffield Shield

Ah, winners are grinners I guess. I’ve been fairly neutral towards the Tiges for the last few years, happy to see success finally come their way.

But that’s enough crowing. I’m off them now!

It's Richmond's league now: The unstoppable Tigers confirm their place in history

Great common-sense article. If the correct call was made immediately, there’s about a 50% chance that we’d have ended up with the Roosters taking possession in their own quarter, exactly as they did. Maybe even a seven-tackle set from the 22, we don’t know.
So instead of stating that the decision cost the Raiders the game, let’s agree that it actually cost them the chance of another opportunity, of which they’d already had plenty. Looked awful at the time, but nowhere near as consequential as it’s been made out to be.
(Mind you, if it ever happened to the Rabbitohs I’d be screaming blue murder!)

A rational review of Sunday’s refereeing dramas

Can’t think of a single issue that would have a higher level of support from all League fans. Get the trainers off the field. Just a horrible blight on the game.

The NRL knew the risks for years about on-field trainers and did nothing

2 million? 50 years ago maybe.

Didn’t St George kill a dragon?

Why the hell do I have to support the Sydney team in the grand final?

And yet you say “may of”.

What the Wallabies need to do to knock off Wales

Gutless? Wow.

Rugby world reacts to Reece Hodge's stunning three game ban

Sensible decision. Couldn’t believe they were considering playing him.
Hope he gets another chance though.

Coniglio officially ruled out of grand final

If nothing else a fit and in-form Marsh gives the selectors that extra option that can be so valuable over the course of a series. As we’re seeing here.

Humble pie all 'round as Mitch Marsh rips through England

I’ve followed Marsh closely for a long time, from back when he was playing junior cricket. Have never been able to reconcile his undoubted ability with his lack of performance at the top level. And I was definitely one that had him down as “never to be picked again”.
But what if there’s a simple explanation for the under-performance? What if it really was because of a lack of commitment to fitness? That’s clearly something he can turn around, and it looks like he may have begun to do so. Seems to have lost a few kilos at least, which will help with that extra yard of pace, and the ability to bat long.
He’s still young enough to have an extended career at the top. I sold my Mitch Marsh shares years ago, but I now have him as a “buy”.

I don’t think you can fluke a day out like that. Genuine quality performance.

Humble pie all 'round as Mitch Marsh rips through England

One of my favourite cricketers, but wasn’t there a point when they worked out that you don’t bowl short to him? Certainly in the short form I recall that greatly reduced his effectiveness.

And his very intelligent bowling variations were a bit ahead of the curve, but similarly were less effective once opposition teams worked him out.

They went all series without dropping their heads, then at the final hurdle they….dropped their Head.

The Ashes: England vs Australia fifth Test preview, prediction

“the first time we have seen such dominance by an individual player since Freddy’s Ashes in 2005”

Excellent article, and not much to disagree with, but have we forgotten about a certain Mr Johnson?

The Ashes: England vs Australia fifth Test preview, prediction

Nah, it was 2-1 in 2005. Then we got an Oval pitch described by Mikey Holding as “a different colour to any Oval pitch he’d seen in 30 years”.
They’ll prepare whatever suits their requirements, so expect a result wicket next week (if the Ashes are still up for grabs).

Australia dominate as England fall apart at Old Trafford

No you don’t, because it never happened.

Rugby league is doing well when the Grand Old Lady sings

Yep, you know things have gone too far when the Austrians need to get involved.

UK public at risk of marring an Ashes series for the ages

Yeah, the Broad thing isn’t a meaningful comparison. Notwithstanding Lehman’s silly comment (wasn’t it on one of those inane commercial radio morning shows?), no-one took the Broad booing very seriously.

From memory it lasted for a couple of days in Brisbane, got a bit of a run in Adelaide and by Perth it had been forgotten about. So much so that Broad began deliberately provoking the WACA crowd, taking ridiculous breaks to change his shoes while batting and generally stirring them up. To be fair to Broad, it looked like he was having fun.

UK public at risk of marring an Ashes series for the ages

The English crowd at the last WACA Ashes Test (and yes, the English dominate the crowd at WACA Ashes Tests) booed Steve Smith all the way to the crease. Not in a fun way, not even pantomime. It was hostile and ugly, and I was amazed that it was barely remarked upon at the time.
That was back when Smith’s only “crime” was to be the best player on either team.
So don’t imagine these people are booing because their delicate sensibilities have been offended. That’s just a convenient excuse.

Who wouldn’t have an issue if an Aussie caught it? Some of us are just cricket fans who want to see the game played the right way. All Root needed to do was signal “not sure, ump”, as I’ve seen numerous players, Australian and otherwise, do in recent years.
I would imagine the umpire’s soft signal is heavily influenced by the certainty of the catcher’s reaction, and it’s hard to overturn from there. So effectively we’re back to the old days of just taking the fieldsman’s word for it.
So it seems we have to accept that Root was certain that he had taken the catch. I’m ok with that, I just wish I hadn’t seen those damned replays.

Joe Root fires back over controversial catch

“Sometimes it is impossible to tell”. Maybe. But Root didn’t say he couldn’t tell, he held his finger up and said it was out. So he claims to be certain that he caught it, and that’s a more difficult position to sustain in the light of all the evidence.

Joe Root fires back over controversial catch

Well if my statement is incorrect, we’re left with “it’s ok to bring charges without evidence”. Can’t see that working out too well.

But I should have made it clear up front, I agree there is a huge grey area here. And I don’t think it’s a big deal in any case.

I’m old enough to remember the English seamer Geoff Arnold rubbing the ball on his brylcreem-covered forehead. The commentary at the time was how this was the exemplar of true English professionalism, much to be admired. A few years later Younis and Akram really got the hang of reverse swing and all hell broke loose. Definitely some inconsistency over the years.

My general inclination is that anything that advantages the bowlers in these batsman-friendly days is not such a bad thing.

No Faffing about - ban du Plessis! The case for and against

Ok. Sorry what are the rules on where the evidence is allowed to come from, and what is the statute of limitations on when it needs to be presented by?
