Spiro,

Brilliant article as usual!
quick question: do you visit newcastle where you are partial to a coffee from estabar?
either that or there is another gentleman sporting a fantastic mo that i see there from time to time.

Cooper defeats the pluck of the Irish

i havent read other comments but – you would seriously put SBW in your all black starting 15??!
…where?
second row? i doubt he has the ability with his league backround to make even a half decent jumper, scrumager, mauler or rucker.
and hes got a good work load but.. backrow?!
McCaw, Latimer, Messam, Kaino, So’oialo, Thompson, Read?!?
you think hes better than these blokes?!? seriously?!

i would say best league forward of our time (im too young to have seen others play)
but he doesnt stand up to union. the fact australia, desperate for depth, have come forward saying theyre not going to chase him why would the kiwis, thriving with quality depth in- well unfortunately everywhere- want him?
i reckon he would struggle to make a kiwi super 15 starting team let alone the ALL BLACKS!

and… the all blacks should play cricket… at least then they would be able to get their hands on a cup.

Sonny Bill Williams, the best forward I've seen

well yes it is an aussie thing. im playing under 20’s rugby here in aus and im a flanker/8 and pigs is just what we refer to all forwards as. pigs piggies. its what we call each other. before kick of our captain who is our hooker will always yell “fire up piggies!!” its not ment as a derogatory term. forwards are big boys. they need to be. its just the way it is. i dont take offense to the term and neither should you! and it probably came about as a nickname because they get down and dirty rather than because theyre fat.

i doubt youve played rugby at all if youve never heard some friendly banter between forwards and backs.
princess.. fairy.. pretty boy.. “what hair gel are you using today?”
there were two very funny coaches at my high school, one forward and one back and their joke went:
“everyone knows forwards are the more important players”
“yes i completely agree!- otherwise who would dance with the ugly chicks at the pub?”
nuff said?

Wallabies need more than just mongrel

WELL SAID!
i wish the ARU had the balls to do it though.
i would get up in the early morning even if it was to watch them get flogged so long as i knew they had some pride in the green and gold.

An open letter to the ARU

yeah i figured it out eventually. you cant really tell tone from typing.

Get rid of the loosies and play rugby 12s

Yeah but people like watching it, but not all of it.
people want to watch it but get annoyed when its not flowing etc.
Yes: rugby is great the way it is, but is it perfect? no.. so lets never stop talking about changing the game to make it better.

Get rid of the loosies and play rugby 12s

being a back row myself its hard to accept but i think it would be a good change.
fitness has improved and too many bodies at the ruck make it hard to ref.

slacky- its not the sneaky/ cheating aspect of flankers like smith and mccaw that would be the problem, because you would just end up with front and second rows learning the same tactics to make up for their absence.

keep a full backline, if you get rid of any of them it becomes too much risky play and then it looks like 10s/7s and the “traditionals” will hate it.

Mungehead- if you got rid of the centre rush defence would work too well as there would not be hard ball runners only 5/8s who pass and wingers who get around people. as a result tactics would change to have the second 5 play like a centre to keep defenders from rushing up.

Virgil- i dont know if your comment was a joke but you need mungrel in a team for it to work. if you get rid of the front row then other player will have to take over that aggression. not to mention second rows would pack into each other making them front rows and making the flankers second rows and then you end up with no flankers…

Flankers could migrate to the centres (george smith and stephen hoiles have played centre for club), the second row (rocky elsom has played there before and certainly fits the built), or maybe even loose head or hooker (TPN used to be an 8 {i think he should be playing 8 for the wallabies} Palu has the size) but leg strength may make front row unlikely.

BUT (and its a big BUT)- this change will never happen.

Get rid of the loosies and play rugby 12s

um… the second row as per usual…
do you watch rugby?

Get rid of the loosies and play rugby 12s

Something No one has seemed to suggest yet- Play TPN at 8. he plays like an 8 anyway and palu and brown arent impressing atm.
apart from that i think Snows team is a winner.
Oh and i wouldnt put Barnes as captain. not because hes not the best option, i think he is, but becuase he wouldnt want it.
did anyone hear the reason he gave for moving to NSW next year??? he wanted to act his age. he was sick of the pressure heaped on him as a 22 year old. he wants to focus on his footy. if he doesnt like the pressure of captaining his state how much will he like captaining his country?
smith or gits for the C in brackets.

Picking a Wallabies team for the next Test

…Moore, alexander, polota-nau…. all enternaining… the more i remissness about last nights game the more i think this article is rubbish- not australian rugby.

Australian rugby union is talentless

Well, sheek, in your comments youve seemed to suggest that the point of your article was completely different to what the article actually said!
the article summarised says: AFL, A-league and the NRL have lots of talented players that are entertaining to watch. Rugby Union used to but doesnt any more.
that’s what i got out of it and the only thought that i was provoked with was: “wasnt sheek watching the baabaas game last night?!?!”
Burgess (i thought played v. well), Gits, Barnes, mortlock, mitchell, o’connor?!?!
these players were fabulous to watch! and if you understand the forwards game then so were phil waugh (still an aussie remember) smith, mumm (did anyone see that hit he put on SBW?), robinson.
They all played well and more than that they were all entertaining to watch!
SO, from your article i can get nothing but “Your an idiot!”
the only australian game that has next to no talent is the A-league. shown by the lack of players from there that play for the socceroos.
dead set- how can you watch GITEAU play and say there’s no talent?!? with carter in crutches he would have to be crowned the best player in the world!! surely?! AND one of the most entertaining.

Australian rugby union is talentless

YES!
whenever i sit sit and ponder who id put in my wallaby XV i always think of players by what position they play at super 14.
At halfback and fullback you are completely right. some creativity is needed unless someone throws their had up this season with a couple of blinders.
one to consider!
the prodigal 5/8 Kurtley at fullback?? he is slowly learning to tackle (in the tahs second last game of the season he was in my fantasy team and racked up 8 tackles and only missed 1 or 2 ) and at fullback his tackling will not be called on as frequently.
hes got a vision for chip and chases.
AND!!
i was at the under 20’s game vs Uruguay last night where he showed some nice form out wide (kurtley is playing 15 for them) where long passing is not called on. he set up and few very good runs with horne outside him, received the ball from opposition kicks and made line breaks, and put a few good kicks through for wingers to chase. and he does have some finisher like pace on him.
thats one im sure Deans will have his eye on.
what do people think of that?

How about something completely different?

Brilliant idea.
i do however doubt Australias ability to produce 8 quality teams. and i think if the ARC does get resurrected (my dream come true- i loved that comp!) then it shouldn’t have a Perth teams but still have a Melbourne team (travel costs and time zones).

Combine ARC with new look Air NZ Cup

Good article.
ill agree with most of your comments about the players. HOWEVER, i think horwill and mitchell with make the squad anyways. mitchell because ioane and shepard are injured (in my opinion our first pick wings)
i think your dead on the money with caldwell and chapman but i dont think horne will make the cut as he hasnt played enough rugby this year. next year kido.

Wallaby squad: bolters and busters

OJ:
“Perhaps there was a time when Nathan Sharpe could take the ball over the advantage line, but these days he takes the ball into contact and looks to form a ruck. And that, my friends, is easy to defend.”
thats right!! BECAUSE times have changed!! ever heard of the ELV’s? under old laws it was the best option to make as many metres as you could but now with more freedom at the breakdown if you go too hard you find yourself isolated and THAT, my friends, is easy to defend! if you take it to ground while your support is still there then you maintain the ball. a few metres means nothing if you dont have the pill!
i could be wrong but you seem like someone who doesnt actually play rugby for himself. or at least hasnt played under the ELV’s.

Is John Eales right or wrong?

yeah i disagree with this and agree with Eales.
you cant tell whos going to be in form at the end of 2011, can you?
I might overcome all odds and be the best openside flanker in the world in 2011 and youd have to pick me then. but im not at the moment. (i know thats a stupid example but you get the point)
Eales wasnt playing for the wallabies 3 years before the 1991 world cup was he? but he started in the final, didnt he?
If you field your best team every game then the wallabies know how to win and the players who are still there at the world cup will know how to get their team over the line.
If you put someone too young in the wallabies then they might get cocky and not train hard.
Injuries, Leadership, supporters numbers, happiness among the players if they win. The list goes on!!
there is a reason John Eales was one of the greatest captains of the wallabies and your not- he knows what hes talking about. Sharp and Waugh are the best in their positions at the moment (debatable for Waugh). thus, they get picked! nuff said?

Is John Eales right or wrong?

I think your on to something!!
we will find out sometime this week what has been decided in that SANZAR meeting in Durban.
A Super 15 sounds inevitable but where is that other team coming from?
Melbourne? Pacific Islands? Japan? OR Argentina? They put themselves on the map during 07. It would be Great to see the Super 15 and Tri Nations become the four Nations.

Something interesting is happening in Argentina
