Savvas,

As an avid Roos supporter I agree Ablett Snr is the most brilliant player I’ve seen(since 1983), however 6 brilliant moments resulting in 5 goals in a game isn’t going to win a brownlow. The umpires give votes to players like Judd because he consistently gathers quality possessions and is behind a large number of goals.

That’s why it is hard for forwards and defenders to win the award. It’s much harder to be consistently getting the pill if the ball is not in your area.

As for the Carey/Jakovich dual. Jakovich won about 50% of the battle and that is considered so good against the King people start to think/remember that he(Jako) won most of them. Sorry but that’s not true.

Overall I’m still amused that an award given by the men in white who are screamed at every game is so revered. Surely the AFLPA award is more highly sort after by the players. great debate though!!

Is Ablett Snr best never to win Brownlow?

David that is exactly why I didn’t include the Hawks in this. And after last night Geelong can kiss boodbye a dynasty but they sure were dominant.

A Geelong dynasty or just a dominant team?

Are you serious about 10.7 sec??????? That is insane!!!!! If I am in fact unlucky enough to ever spill that beer I’m dropping into the fetal position and squealing like girl Homer style!!!!

As for refering to Footy/Aussie Rules as AFL I just figured on this site Footy is with a round ball but I do prefer Aussie Rules.

Who are the fittest athletes in Australian sport?

google – They are very imressive stats indeed!!!! If they are in fact true (haha) Remind me to never spill a beer on him!!!

To be honest google you’ve made me realise that fitness and ball skills (hand eye coordination) don’t neccessarily run hand in hand!!!! I truely believe AFL requires every player (read: most) to have an extremely high level of hand eye coord and fitness but can’t think of anyone who matches this Spies dudes abilities!!

Interesting!!

Who are the fittest athletes in Australian sport?

He just jogged/walked 780 km’sin 10days. Obviously avg’d 78km’s a day. A very impressive effort indeed!!!!!!

All for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Who are the fittest athletes in Australian sport?

JF -agreed.

However isn’t the debate about which sport has the greatest athlete? not which 5 blokes go together to make the best combination.

I might be biased but I think AFL has the ‘complete’ athlete covered over the other football codes.

Who are the fittest athletes in Australian sport?

google – 95% of all AFL players have to cover all 3 of those areas. These days the game is so quick you have to be able to be explosive coupled with speed as well as have the power to a) kick a ball 60 metres accurately b) run head on into another 90+kg player.

Having said that, the average elite AFL player wouldn’t excell in power against say RL or RU players.

It is an interesting debate though!

Who are the fittest athletes in Australian sport?

It’s interesting that the sports who use the services of cheerleaders/pit girls as distractions (and let’s be honest that’s what they are!) have dull moments during their game/event.

AFL doesn’t use them (I don’t think the Power do anymore??) because it has a ball in constant motion, therefore negating the need for this service. I am very proud that when my 11 month old son grows up watching AFL he won’t be asking why the camera keeps learing at those under dressed females.

As for motorsports, they need the scantilly dressed ladies (sic) because apart from the crashes and the final lap it’s similar to watching any freeway only faster.

I have nothing against people wanting to ogle girls, particularly those who are being paid to look a certain way. Just be honest and admit it’s more interesting than the ‘event’ it is attached to.

Cheerleaders do have a place in modern sport

Brian,

I didn’t mean to imply that North ‘deserved’ to win the premiership in ’97. It was a checky comment to make I admit.

I was merely implying that injury had crippled us and the Kangaroos were a very good chance of making 4 Grand Finals in a row. (Yes, before everyone gets huffy, alot of teams could make excuses missed opportunities.)

I do understand that being able to overcome adversity and still win is what counts. I just saying that in ’95 ‘We’ miss the GF by a missed kicked that landed in Ablett Snr’s hands. And in ’97 ‘We’ lost Wayne Carey (arguably the most important person to a team in the ’90’s) for most of the season and Corey McKernan (our 2nd most important player) in that infamous Prelim. It was after the McKernan injury that St Kilda ran away with the win.

However, Brian you are correct, I was drawing a log bow. I also tend to agree that GF’s are the point and at the moment Brisbane holds the dominance Cup. Let’s see what happens next Saturday?

A Geelong dynasty or just a dominant team?

Maydok,
Obviously it’s a mistake!!!!! When I submitted the article it was in a table and when they (The Roar) published it they mixed the numbers up. (It happens to the best of us)

Later on in the article I state that the Roos made the Finals 8 times, Prelim 7 in a row, 3 GF’s and 2 Premierships. I also clarified this (or so I thought) as soon as I read the article on the 2nd comment.

Some people on blogs, chat rooms and social networking sites are so quick to point out typos etc as if it only happens to idiots and simpletons.

How can you expect to be taken seriously when you actually believe that someone would have 3 premierships and 7 GF’s in row.

A Geelong dynasty or just a dominant team?

Yeah good luck Redb, As a North supporter I would love to see the Pies win the minor prem and NOT make the GF!!

A Geelong dynasty or just a dominant team?

The Kangaroos Stats should read Finals 8 Prelim 7 (in a row) GF’s 3 Premierships 2 Top 4 6

Something must have been lost in translation??

A Geelong dynasty or just a dominant team?

Interesting point Whites.

The Brisbane Lions (AFL) don’t count the Fitzroy premierships and they definitely distance themselves from the ‘Bears’ record.

Aiden you’ve written an interesting article that is already causing debate (I’m assuming that’s the point!)

Is 2010 really the year of the Dragon?

Kick to kick,

You first state that it’s very Victoria centric???? You then claim Geelong have too many reps based on them not winning minor premiership. Then you think Sydney should get a rep because they finished top 8??? 1 kick away from top 4??????? Well the Kangaroos were 1 kick away from top 8 (should have beaten Essendon {debatable!!}) so Brent Harvey should have been selected??
Based on your reasoning on why Sydney deserve a rep just points out why there are more vic players. 6 out of 8 team in finals 8. You can’t have it both ways!

Geelong had more reps than Collingwood because they have the star power. Collingwood have played an extremely consistent ‘team’ brand of footy and that is why they finished 1st.

I’m a North supporter and must admit I was a little dissapointed that they came up empty but understand that it’s based on opinion and they were picking the team as a team and NOT the best 22 players.

I think every supporter could muster up a reason why some of their players could/should have been selected.

Brady Rawlings – one of the best taggers but still amassed the 5th highest possesions in the league.
Andrew Swallow – Lead the league in tackles and uses the ball well. Fits a definite role in a team.
Brent Harvey – Speedy, breaks the lines and inspires the team.

However I can completely see why they missed out. Hayes probably should be in their though as a better version of Swallow.

The All-Australian selectors get it right, mostly

The replies seem to have stopped by I’ll weigh in anyway!!!

I’m an ardent AFL fan but definitely see room for the ‘other’ codes.
All of the codes need to focus on where they can improve and what is working for them. I’m definitely not going to bash another sport because they all require a different skill set. Although I do find it amusing that the Football community can question the skill of AFL players when they use a round ball and still finish a game nil all after 90 minutes. This isn’t to say Football is boring and lacking skill but a reminder that all sports when misinterpreted can be maligned.

How many times does a bomb in NRL go uncaught? How many times does an AFL kick from 15 infront spray out of bound on the full? There are many reasons why so called sloppy play occurs in all sports ranging from pressure, nerves and fatigue.

Fos concludes that the AFL is weak
