We will have to wait and see Peter.
Hawks have a younger list than the Pies and a better crop of key players forward and back. Not sure who the big key forwards the Pies have, after yesterday it looked like only Cox who isn’t going to help them rise up the ladder.
Hawks put in a better effort this week than the Pies and had 3 of the draftees looking really promising, especially Ward who got 29 disposals and only played 67% game time. No one should be expecting Reeves, Worpel, Newcombe and Ward to match it with Nankervis, Martin, Cotchin and Prestia.

Pies were sluggish and looked very slow, Giants did as they pleased.

AFL Oracle: Which bottom-five team from last year can surge into finals in 2022?

I don’t think any will improve. I thought l misread where you had the Pies.
GWS easily dismissed them in a practice match. Seemed like the Giants were only going about 70% and did whatever they wanted.
Pies have no forward line to kick that many winning scores to get out vof the bottom 4 let alone the eight.
Long time down the bottom.

AFL Oracle: Which bottom-five team from last year can surge into finals in 2022?

Hopefully there will be a highly rated key forward they can pick up in this year’s draft.

AFL pre-season: Saints' worst nightmare strikes, Tigers backman's bag heralds 'three-headed monster', Port young guns looking Rozee

Ward, Newcombe and Long are all well built young guys that love the hard contest. McDonald looked really good yesterday also. Only have seen Ward and McDonald play two GE’s but look to be really good pick ups.
Long is a lot better than his rookie selection and would have gone in the first night had it not been for injuries.
I thought Maginess looked pretty good also and has good size.

Just need to get Day, Impey, Jiath, and Bramble all fit and playing together. That’s a lot of half back running missing and a big key to Mitchell’s game plan.

I don’t think anyone is expecting the Hawks to be higher than what most have predicted this year.

The positives from the practice game for me was seeing the young players stand up against the experienced Tigers midfield. Ward as expected looks ready to go as does McDonald and Logan. Newcombe was a big highlight for me, tough and hard in the contest and a good pick up in the mid season draft last year. At one stage in the centre was Nankervis, Martin, Cotchin and Prestia vs Reeves, Worpel, Ward and Newcombe interchanging with McDonald and Nash and thought with the lack of experience they did a pretty good job. Good signs for the future.

The forward line struggled yesterday but matched the tigers inside 50’s and scoring shots. Kosi only played the second half who was our best forward last year. Hoping they give Jackson Callow a run this year.

Really looking forward to the season and watching the young kids get a crack and develop.

I watched the game on Kayo Peter and there were literally unknowns on both sides from about halfway through the fourth quarter. Both teams had inexperienced listed players and VFL players in the last couple. Hawks were missing about 9 from their best 22 in the first 3 quarters and the pies about 4 including Qaynor who got concussed.
I have no expectations of where the Hawks are at but my take from the game was that they have picked up 3 promising players in the draft in Ward and McDonald who got plenty of the ball and used it wisely and Long who looks like he could be that big bodied mid the Hawks are after.
Ward who was a high draft pick at 7 had very similar stats to Daicos last year and was a big stand out to me.

Returning stars, breakout recruits or just getting through it: What your AFL team wants out of the AAMI Community series

Hawks weren’t going very hard Peter and shouldn’t be for a practice match. Kosi playing on Grundy in the first term should be a good indication of how the teams were thinking going in.
Both teams played their VFL side and players that haven’t had much game experience, Hawks look to have better depth if they can peg back an 80 plus point deficit.

You can only take so much out of them but it’s good to be positive at this time of year.
Hawks will be down the bottom but will not be expecting them to play the way they did.
Stengle looked really good, hope he can have a season without any interruptions.

It was a very bruise free contest, Kosi was playing on Grundy in the first term and Mitchell was trying a few things with the young players.
About 9 of the best 22 weren’t playing in the first couple of quarters. Pies played well but also put a lot more effort in.
Ward, McDonald and Long looked really good for the Hawks which is promising for the future.
One good take is that the Hawks have a lot more depth then the Pies coming back from 80 points plus with both teams fielding a lot of younger players in the last 2 terms.
Only can take so much from practice games but l did read that the Collingwood social media were promoting finals after a practice match. Must of meant a lot to them.

I have no idea either, the last couple of years Port have been praised for the young players in their team and what they did in the last few years in the draft.

'Force to be reckoned with': Suns unveil new game plan that will embarrass their critics

Yeah l had Dunkley last year also but will give him another chance, Duncan will be his replacement if he doesn’t score well.
Dusty has burnt me in the past, can really be hit and cold with his scoring but at a cheaper price will be worth it.

AFL fantasy 2022: Five players you must buy

One of mine also, hopefully he can get back to his best this year.

AFL fantasy 2022: Five players you must buy

Usually l only have a
couple of premiums in the midfield and then balance it out.

I went with 4 premium priced players in my mid plus Dunkley in the forward line. l think a few of the first round draft picks will get a game early, well l hope so anyway.
I usually balance it up as much as possible but have put in a lot of those players in my team this year

Put in Sicily, Haynes, Coniglio and Stengle as my bargain buys which helped out a fair bit

Witt’s is a good selection, l went with Darcy and Draper as my rucks with Max Lynch on the bench.

I am trying not to change it too much before the start of the season like l normally do.

AFL fantasy 2022: Five players you must buy

Good article, have all these players in my side. Sean Darcy should be another lock in the ruck.

Have Steele, Miller, Mitchell and Parish as my big four in the midfield.
Had Walsh but replaced him with Steele. Coniglio in the midfield should be another certainty at such a cheap price.

AFL fantasy 2022: Five players you must buy

I see them fighting out for the bottom 4, need a big improvement from last year to jump up the ladder.
On and Off field issues have plagued the club for sometime and l don’t see anywhere from a list perspective where they will improve.

Six reasons I'm an optimistic Magpies fan this year

Voss can only do so much, from the media to footy fans there is too much pressure on new coaches.
Need to be given a chance.
Once the siren sounds it’s up to the players to follow through with the game plan and execute it. I don’t think Carlton will make the 8 but l do think they will improve.
In the past few years they have recruited a lot of their list from other clubs to fill their needs and it takes time for those players to really gel as a team.
I think they need another season together and than really hit the 8 in 2023 as hard as that is for me to say.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'Voss has the clay, but can he shape it?'

Gumbleton unfortunately just couldn’t get his body right and had one of the worst runs with injury.
Should have had a long successful career. I liked the way Myers played but didn’t live up to his high pick.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's not difficult to see a wooden spoon in their near future'

I agree, a few more years battling down the bottom and getting those top end draft picks.
In saying that top picks doesn’t equate to success, more than a few clubs can testify to that.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's not difficult to see a wooden spoon in their near future'

It was mostly at the hands of Kennets stupid email he sent out. Only days later Mitchell said something different to Kennett. I though what Mitchell said was more on point and seemed to not agree with Kennett.
I don’t think there was any real damage done as the team played very well and looked like they were all on the same page.
It certainly wasn’t handled in the right way but l would have preferred Mitchell to take over this year.
Might have been worse had Clarkson stayed until the end of his contract.
I would have moved on Kennett also at the end of the year. Like Eddie his mouth moves before his brain.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's not difficult to see a wooden spoon in their near future'

Your right Charlie, the Hawks for some time have had a good VFL program and the transition between the two clubs has been quite smooth.
Mitchell having knowledge of the players coming through can only be a bonus.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's not difficult to see a wooden spoon in their near future'

Proof will always be in the pudding. Perception is not reality, by all accounts Mitchell loves a good laugh but knows what he wants to do amd he seems very direct in his approach.
He played on the edge and looks like he will do that with his coaching going by the latest press conference.
He has also surrounded him with some new assistant coaches in Harvey, Hale and Hickmott who followed him from West Coast after 11 years because of his professionalism and head for footy.
I am expecting Hawthorn in the bottom 6, shouldn’t be expecting anything more.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's not difficult to see a wooden spoon in their near future'

Nah the guys a muppet and has had enough chances. He didn’t win very many games last year for the pies. Who know’s what affect he is having on the playing group.
Him plus all the other off field drama hurt Collingwood on field. No player is bigger than the club, how many more chances do you give him?

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's not difficult to see a wooden spoon in their near future'

Mitchell has a different mindset. Already changed things in the club since his appointment and has been highlly praised by a lot of the players about the way he has gone about it. He is not afraid to step on toes and says what he thinks.
The players seem to be very united with Mitchell. Breust said that while he enjoyed playing under Clarko he knew exactly what he had to do, on field and at training. Now he has no idea what to expect and is being challenged and feels like a new draftee which he said feels good.
Everybody seems really positive at the club Peter, it’s a lot of the arm chair experts who think negatively of Mitchell.
They don’t all work out but l think everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves. I am will back him 100%

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's not difficult to see a wooden spoon in their near future'

I do think that Mitchell coaching Box Hill has helped ease the transition to coaching Hawthorn. He knows the young players and has helped a lot of them get senior games but your right the limited game time has impacted the clubs.
I do agree with a lot of what you have said but like that some changes have been made. We are all passionate on here and love our footy and it’s always good to see someone else’s perspective.
Haha, I totally understand how that would make you feel. It is people that really turn you off a side a lot of the time and some supporters can be quite frustrating to say the least.
I was a very negative supporter when the Hawks were up the top which annoyed my mates a fair bit at the footy.
I think you can sometimes enjoy footy a lot more when there is no expectation and you can just sit back and enjoy a game to a certain degree.
Can’t wait for the season to start and the banter back and forth.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's not difficult to see a wooden spoon in their near future'

Never said they were going to be great players Macca so not sure where you got that from. They have had a tried and tested formula for years that has worked.
Now there has been a change on and off field and l for one am happy with the new direction and prefer to be positive rather than be negative.
As you are well aware we can all hope our clubs turnaround sooner rather than later.
Some clubs have been rebuilding for years without success so we can only hope.
I know for one l am really looking forward to the season starting and enjoy the season regardless where the Hawks finish.
