Love sport, hate bullshit

Fatal flaw of this article AZ_RBB is to assume that whatever the Daily Telegraph prints is actually true.

Flares provide unnecessary ammunition for detractors

Rebecca Wilson. Alan Jones. Daily Telegraph. Say no more.

Turns out half of these people have never been banned from a football match at all, ever.

Turns out 30% of them have never been members of an A-League club and there are doubts that they even exist.

Many of the accused are under 18 years of age and so is illegal in NSW to publish their names and photographs.

Expect legal action, retractions and public apologies.

He certainly had an influence on the 2015 grand final, knocking out Matty Jurman early in the game with a well placed elbow that required 25 stitches. He should of been sent off, instead of allowed to play on and score one goal and set up another.

With Muscat as your coach, you expect that sort of behaviour, its probably part of his game plan. 🙁

He was at it again on Saturday night with a string of fouls that should have got him two yellows and a red.
And then whenever he got a faint touch or bump he fell over like a bag of potatoes writhing in agony.

He certainly is a good striker, but I think he is hated more than he is liked, especially in Sydney.

Berisha shaping up as A-League's key player yet again

What a pity Broich and Berisha aren’t eligible for the Socceroos.

Berisha shaping up as A-League's key player yet again

Welcome back Mike, best writer on the Roar and good to have you back and read your account of that historical night.

I was there too, Great, great game and best sporting moment of my life so far. That’s all I’ll say.

I’ve got the DVD and I dust it off and play it every now and then. Just played it again and still brings a tear to my eye.

The other great memory was going home on a packed train, everyone singing and total strangers hugging each other. Never seen it before.

Ange Postecoglou was on Australian story tonight on the ABC and he said, “I want to win a world cup. We’ve got time. There’s still 3 years to go till the next one.”

Ten years to the day: We'll never see another game like it

Memories of a magical night ten years ago

Absolutely MelbCro and we are all football – the NPL and state leagues in every state are part of that growth and all the credit to you. Any football fan in Australia deserves credit for helping the game grow, even if its just taking your kids down to the park every weekend to watch them play.

The FFA is trying to reach out to the whole football family and held out an olive branch with the FFA Cup where A-League and NPL teams and fans can sit shoulder to shoulder. It had a lot of criticism before it even started and people predicted it wouldn’t work. But its been moderately successful and will continue to grow.

Be part of the football family and come and join us. It doesn’t necessarily need to be an A-League game, just give credit where credit is due and encourage people to keep striving and getting better, from the Socceroos right down to little Johnny at your local club.

I take pride in whatever we’ve achieved, the Socceroos, the A-League, the NPL’s growth and feats in the FFA Cup. I’m never going to write an article in the Roar that says the NPL and ethnic football clubs are an embarrassment to football. If I was a true Australian football fan, why would I? We have all played a very important part in the growth of the game here, from the very first day it landed in Australia.

The A-League is an embarrassment to football

Would the A-League be better off if it had the Sutherland Sharks instead of New Zealand Phoenix?

The FFA is giving the Nix a chance to redeem themselves.
If NZ wants a team in the A-League, then they need to support them, because they are currently tailing the field in terms of attendances, ratings and revenues.

Wellington Phoenix are an Oceaniac problem in Asian football

Dear George, thanks for you thoughts.
Have you ever been to an A-League game or a Melbourne Derby?
How can you judge, if you have never attended.

All competitions have to start somewhere.
In fact, the A-League is doing very well in its short history and is ranked in the top twenty leagues in the world, ahead of competitions that have been running over 100 years and in more highly populated countries than Australia.

I understand your frustration, but no-one really wants to go back to what we had before.

All levels of football have made very good progress in the last 10 years and we are becoming regulars at World Cup Finals, so don’t hate it or hate everyone else.

Try and embrace it, by George!

“But is Tim Cahill second?”

Second at what – eating the most number of weet bix in one sitting? 🙂

Justin, I’d have a good afternoon discussion with you over a few Kilkennies, that Tim Cahill isn’t even the best Socceroo of all time. That’s not to say that Tim is not one of Australian Football’s greats. We’ve had a few of them and the list keeps growing.

Bradman is of another generation and maybe, despite his feats on the cricket field, would probably be less popular or well known nowadays than Tim Cahill, especially with the younger ones.

I hope that Tim bags a few more on Thurs night against the Kyrgies and adds to his record for the most number of goals for the Socceroos. Postecoglou is certainly giving him every chance to do so.

Is Tim Cahill second to Don Bradman?

Leckie, Spiranovic and Ryan out.

If you were the Kyrgies manager and could get rid of 3 Aussies for this game, they would probably be the ones he would have chosen. 🙂

But it is Kyrgyzstan.
If we can’t beat this Stan at home, we really don’t deserve to be playing at Russia 2018.

Wake-up calls fuelling Socceroos

Absolutely, the minister for police signs off on how many police can work overtime to attend sporting matches.

This is media and politics driven. The media have conflict of interest because they make money out of other sports. The politicians don’t want to lose face so they police to the media complaints.

As I said previously, we were at the Sydney Derby and we saw nothing. The people who were ejected were WSW fans who lit flares, which is correct according to the rules and they will be banned for 5 years from going to the A-League, but no one was hurt by the flares.

If anyone can prove that there is no fan trouble at AFL or NRL games, I will switch allegiance to MV, which is the last thing I want to do right now. 🙂

This siege mentality against football MUST end

http://www.oztam.com.au/faqs.aspx

Since the start of the 2010 ratings year, OzTAM ratings have included both ‘Live’ viewing and viewing of broadcast television content that is recorded and played back within seven days of the original broadcast time (OzTAM’s Time Shift viewing service).

OzTAM’s “sample” is biased, because its owned by commercial TV stations, so they don’t pick people who don’t watch 7,9 or 10. Therefore SBS and ABC program ratings severely underestimated.

Optus, the new player in Australia's sports media rights battle

People who record programs are also included in the OzTAM figures. You need to tune in to the program to record it and their goggle box picks it up.

Asian Champions League could be the leveller.

Would love to see MV or SFC do well in the ACL, but the further they progress, the more it will hurt their domestic campaign, like it did to the Wanderers.

Very impressed with the Roar as well and without any ACL challenges and Aloisi’s resurgence as a wiser manager, they will make a worthwhile challenge.

Agree that MV, SFC and Roar will feature heavily in the finals, but I was very impressed with the Wanderers and expect them to be a big danger as well.

Melb City won’t make the top 4, unless they sack their manager sometime soon.

PRICHARD: Victory, Sydney, Roar and City the only title chances

This is what they said when Wanderers started – another Sydney team will kill Sydney FC.
Look what happened, Sydney FC and Wanderers record attendances and every derby for last 3 years a sell out.

If its done right, no reason why a 3rd Sydney team will not do well either and grow the league even more.
The Sutherland Surfies! Westies v Surfies v Bling, bring it on.
The Surfies could even have cheer leaders in gold bikinis. I’m getting a vision of it right now.

Its up to Nix and their fans to show us they belong in the A-League. If they want to, they have 4 years to turn it all around.

I hope they do and we also get 2 more teams in the A-League in the next four years to make it a 12 team competition.
We just need football people with courage and a forward vision (and some cash).

No to the A-League's southern superclub

Why aren’t there any positive Roar stories on football.
Didn’t the Joey’s U17s just make it to the last 16 of a World Cup for the first time in 12 years?

A-League derby ratings fail to pack punch

AFL and NRL advertising spend was up 15% this year, but attendances and ratings still went down.

A-League derby ratings fail to pack punch

Yes, ratings and attendances may be down, but on a more positive note, predictions of the death of the A-League are up 69% on last season, which is a very impressive growth figure.

A-League derby ratings fail to pack punch

Well said Fuss and agree with you.
As a CEO you can’t be sentimental. he wants all A-League clubs to be self sufficient eventually and not draining money from the FFA all the time.

If they can’t do that then yes, lets shut down the A-League and go back to what we had before. Is that what football fans want or do we want all clubs to lift their game.

Wellington Phoenix cannot "squat on a licence": Gallop

So you were at the game and saw people being hit with lighted flares?
You probably don’t even live in Sydney.

I was there and didn’t see any trouble as reported by the press. Their stories are written days before the game and are trotted out after every derby game.

Stop the flares! Australia's fight with fire

He hasn’t thrown them out yet, he’s given them the opportunity. They’ve given them 4 years to prove they really want to be in the league.

If they do that and improve their numbers they’ll get another 10 year extension.
Its in their hands.

The FFA have given them a fair go and defended them against the AFC, who want them kicked out of the A-League because they are in another country and another confederation and not in the Asian Confederation, like Australia.

Wellington Phoenix cannot "squat on a licence": Gallop

Rumour is a 3rd Sydney team will be appointed, based in the Sutherland Shire, which has the biggest football participation numbers in Australia. It will be partially funded by the FFA and Cronulla Sharks and Shark Park will be their home ground.

9 Sydney Derbies a year!

This is just in case of the likely event that the AFC will not approve the extension past this season.

Stop the flares! Australia's fight with fire

The flares aren’t thrown at anyone.

Stop the flares! Australia's fight with fire

I agree that flares are dangerous and should be stopped. Not because someone will get hurt, but because the anti-Football press will use it against you.

Congratulations to the Wanderers and Sydney FC fans too, who made it such a great spectacle and atmosphere. My family and friends thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We went by public transport and walked to the ground and didn’t see any trouble, in fact the fans were in very good spirits singing and joking, even after the wanderers had lost. Well done Sydney!
