Demise of the Rebels, IMO, makes the case in favour of opting out of Super Rugby, in favour of a national comp – maybe with set salary tiers – stronger.

The Wrap: Spare a thought for injured players as Super Rugby’s two rutting rhinos deliver an epic final preview

If RA (correctly?) denies Rebels a place in Super Rugby, it surely must be just a stepping stone, to restoring them in a new national domestic comp. So just a first step, in Oz exit from Super Rugby?

The really common sense (and fair) way to retain talent onshore, would be to change the Giteau law, so that players under a certain age (25 or younger?) can only be selected for Wallabies, if based in the national domestic comp.

From World Cup glory to a financial precipice. Where did the $48 million go?

Constructive, realistic article (IMO).

Statement that prior national comps unaffordable, needs context. Unaffordable paired with Super whilst Giteau law in place. Sustainable solution, in absence of Super, without Giteau law in place.

Sydney northside v Sydney southside (ie Eastern suburbs) could be steroids tribalism. That’s before adding “wests” = Western Sydney + West of the Divide.

Bifurcate for Qld = 2 teams

Triplicate for NSW = 3 teams

“seemingly everyone having a stake in Australian rugby having a different solution”

Past time for stakeholders in Super Rugby, to recognise it’ bedtime for that comp. Even in days when it seemed to work for Oz, it masked absence of national comp, which really could not compete with it.

Rebels, Force, Brumbies need to recognise end of Super Rugby does not mean their end, and Waratahs and Queensland need to decide how best to [bifurcate] their top team, in interest of successful domestic comp.

Down the track, state of origin maybe. Add a 3rd, Rest of Oz. Works for NRL.

Terrific potential tribalism within NSW from split into Norths, Souths and Wests;
In an ideal world, goodwill/affiliations permitting use of historical rugby league colours and mascots (update Norths grizzly bear to grizzly koala!).
Wests (Parramatta Stadium) = all Western NSW north of Brumbies’ Riverina catchment AND Sydney from west/south of Lane Cove River catchment to west/north of [Old Canterbury Road].
Souths (Moore Park Stadium) = all of Sydney south/east of [Old Canterbury Road] AND coast south to Nowra (beyond which is Brumbies
Norths (North Sydney oval) = Sydney north/East of Lane Cove River catchment AND coast north to the QLD border.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

Agree.

Full stop.

The most pressing constitutional change, apart from closed RA board nominees shop, is to cull Super Teams from having voting entitlement, on how rugby is run.

That does not mean culling Perth, Melbourne, Brumbies. Just means they cannot vote, to stop themselves, plus multiple teams from each of NSW and QLD, giving birth to proper domestic comp.

'Previous chairman can not be a scapegoat': First salvo fired in bid to spill the Rugby Australia board

PPS – that is 3 teams in Sydney, and 5 teams throughout rest of Australia = 8. Build from there.

'Previous chairman can not be a scapegoat': First salvo fired in bid to spill the Rugby Australia board

PS – one which clearly seeks to establish tribalism, such as rugby fans in Sydney, north and (versus?) south of the bridge. Add in Western Suburbs (Magpies west of, and inclusive, of Joeys and Kings private schools), and in Sydney alone, you have a ready platform for that tribalism.

'Previous chairman can not be a scapegoat': First salvo fired in bid to spill the Rugby Australia board

Unless the purpose of those incoming, is to establish primacy of a national domestic competition – whether pro or initially semipro – over Super Rugby, rugby in Australia will continue to stagnate IMO.

Many rhetorical questions – I seem to concur absolutely with all (possibly) implied answers.

Anything that presses the elite game to encourage ‘athletes’ not ‘players’ is, IMO, mistaken route.

Conversely, anything that encourages reversal of that trend…

And in other news, Italy has just moved ahead of the Wallabies in rugby’s official world rankings.

I so wish, it was practical, for tests to be organised (maybe 3 game series) along lines of, ‘next year’, ‘this year’s rankings of’

1 v 2
2 v 3
etc

Would be delighted to see Italy and Fiji visit Oz – with Wallabies and Italy then visiting Fiji.

Call it a ‘tripartite test series’.
