'Massive impact': Wallabies gun says cutting Rebels will affect Victorian juniors - and points to John Eales medal winner as proof

John

Strongly back your point about tight 5 being the positions least at risk (zero?) of losing ‘potential Wallabies talent’ – whether U 12s or established pro level – to NRL or AFL.

If RA applied common sense, and wished Wallabies to succeed, it would place greatest emphasis – in exactly what form others best to opine – on tight five players.

Don’t focus on ‘star athletes’ in the backs who can be pinched by NRL or offshore clubs – rely more for Wallabies on backs with rugby nous who plan play as team with strong core skills, low error rate.

Back row arguably can look after itself pretty much.

IMO

Aussie rugby is shooting itself in the foot over its recruitment strategy. It must change to give Wallabies a RWC hope

Surely the main debate is whether zero ‘Super Rugby’ teams is best for Australia.

It sure ain’t the “Super Rugby” it was a couple of decades ago. Long time since it has been. Sooner R.I.P. that comp, the better IMO.

No BS “super” rugby – quite different IMO.

Just imagine if we had a low salary 8 team domestic comp:

– QLD North (of Brisbane River)
– QLD South (of same river)
– North Sydney
– South Sydney
– Western Sydney
– Brumbies (ACT + all country NSW)
– Rebels (VIC, SA, Tas)
– Force (WA, NT)

And a 3 team “home of origin” comp (6 game H&A season, 7 if add final) selected from:

– NSW
– QLD
– Ozzie Barbarians (rest of Oz).

Latter comp coyld be played for no salary, effectively trial for Wallaby selection / $$$.

Capabilities.

Accounting 101 ain’t rocket science:

P&L v B/S v C/F; understand that?

Calculate PV of cash flows?

Throw in one line understanding of Opportunity Cost, broadest possible application of Just in Time, whatyagot?

All the base theory you’ll ever need.

PE and investment vvanking ain’t rocket science, just gougingly wasteful thievery.

More accurately, Knucklehead the could put up as single companion on desert island, rather than having no company whilst isolated there.

Bonehead, the opposite. Drag.

Knucklehead I think has negligible but existent capacity to play the fool and laugh. Bonehead neither. That is the technical difference between the two.

'Thank f--k': Why RA's new chairman has brought 'hope at last' - and won't be scared of tough calls

I’m with this savant.

I’m pumping for QLD union to effectively be broken down across 2 or 3 regions. No reason why such assets can’t continue in a QLD shell, with income split like a dividend annual income between those 2 or 3 regions.

W as far as I’m concerned, RA going to the wall is no drama. Hand over the Wallabies brand name to American loan firm so they can sell it to whom?

Phoenix rises in new national rugby body, with constituent stakeholders being regions corresponding to new national domestic rugby teams. Likely meaning at least in short term, funnily enough (or obviously enough) a vote for WA, Vic and ACT, two from QLD bodies, 3 from NSW.

Humility cuts both ways: Brett Clark and the QRU deserve the same scrutiny as Hamish McLennan

How can any Queenslans school even claim to be GSP. As Keats once said (not the poet, but he sure thought of himself as one):

Well, if the same players have been offered school scholarships whilst playing rugby league, then the schools don’t give a toss that they depart for league, and displace students who might otherwise…

I was going to say crapola to your last paragraph, but then recalled Jeznez sighting borrowing figures for RA from last-resort lenders.
Are you thinking RA needs QLD’s real property, as hard asset security, on which to base a refinancing, at materially lower interest rate? I cannot recall the rate quoted by Jeznez, but it was in order, of late 1980s rates.

Congratulations excellent article.

Constructive observations from the north.

IMO both big states should effectively be dissolved, in relation to their territorial oversight of the game; and replaced by regional bodies, whose peak playing teams would participate at national domestic comp level against, say Perth, Canberra and Melbourne (who would have their own territorial responsibilies eg Canberra for Riverina).

NSW and QLD rugby entities would be meaningless, except for selection of their representative team for the annual tripartite State of Origin comp. One game each (total 3 annual games) between NSW, QLD and BESTofRESTofOZ. O would expect, the latter region, to overtime, out-mongrel the cultural strength of the Brums.

If Canberra, Perth or Melbourne generate the player talent they purport to, then they will dominate (1) the national domestic comp, (2) State of Origin, and (3) Wallaby team selections. It is feasible.

Arguably, the hardest argument NSW and QLD grandees would face in short or long term, in centralisation, is one calling for their dissolution.

At end of internally focussed domestic comps, Australia, New Zealand and other rugby nations in our shared time zone, could consider what form, a limited season ‘super rugby’ season might take. Allows every nation, to offer ‘annual honour selection’ contracts, to their players. Let the big guns go offshore, 4 o/s experience.
