A New Zealander born and raised in the bastion of Rugby Union in the deep South of New Zealand. A fan of rugby league since the Winfield Cup captured the attention of so many union purists and a North Sydney Bears tragic ever since. And having lived in Melbourne a follower of St Kilda in AFL.

@ BigGordon

The Swans relocation was always going to be a long-term project after all who thought taking AFL north of the Barassi line would be an instant success, the club had to break down barriers and win over population used to 2 rugby codes.
As to the form a new club theme the AFLs Brisbane Bears was exactly that and it struggled and was about to fail until it threw their lot in with Fitzroy also going Nrth and the Brisbane Lions were almost immediately successful. A new club is a risk an established club lessens that risk.
And besides the Bears are an existing Sydney club – thank you! They do everything that an NRL club does and does it as well on a fraction of the funding.

NRL Round 10 Talking Points: Sharks' statement win - and can we stop it with the North Sydney Bears talk?

@Don
I am a strident Bears supporter.
I ain’t no Boomer.
I didn’t just say oh well no Bears I’ll pick another team.
If the Bears go to Perth they at least have authentic and automatic fans and they’ll have the chance to win over the locals which I’m sure they’ll do.
As for buying out the Penns I’d rather they and that team just went belly up and left altogether!

@RedRob
It’s hardly a failed club though is it?

@ AJ Mithen
Name one!
In American MLB and NFL the team and identity are moved from one city to another . Brooklyn Dodgers to LA Dodgers.

@ DJames
The Bears were the first to look at that option and planned ahead and to go that way and look what happened to them with weak excuses to remove them. At least if Perth goes ahead it’ll be some kind of righting a past wrong.

@ Abbot
I will settle on the West Coast Bears!

@ Pneuma

Which is exactly why you don’t!

Already in the name: Why sending the Tigers west makes the best sense for NRL expansion

@ Rosie

Well Central Coast Bears weren’t allowed to get off the ground despite a successful membership drive and having enough public support. So give the West Coast Bears a shot I say.

NRL News: Politis' PNG snub, radical conference shake-up in odd proposal, Sharks switch skippers

@tufanooo
I think the Bears have made and remade their position clear over and over until they’re blue in the face. Simply it is let us back in. Prey tell us why they folded as I suspect an uninformed projection of opinion.

NRL News: Politis' PNG snub, radical conference shake-up in odd proposal, Sharks switch skippers

@ Maxtruck.

Well they did stand alone for 92 years. And since the end of that sham merger they have. And they’ve done it well.
As for the sucking off the teat of other teams that’s a bit rich considering the amount of financial aid ie bail outs other teams have been given over the years. Not to mention the ever increasing amount the clubs demand from the ARL/NRL in from Broadcast revenue.

Want the Bears back? Then get real - forget about North Sydney Oval and commit to genuine NRL expansion

@ Snookers

The Central Coast Bears rebrand was a good redesign it’s just a pity it wasn’t allowed to succeed.
As for messing with the red and black I mostly agree but you could do an away or alternate jersey that reflects WA or Perths traditions and history.

Who do you think the Cumberland team was reborn as? Answer Parramatta they played at Cumberland Oval then renamed Parramatta Stadium if I’m not mistaken.

I think those who know rugby league will know the Bears and that’s a good starting point. WA is a AFL state but there’s enough union and league followers and players to establish a foothold. West Coast Bears has a certain ring to it.

Forty Twenty

Yeah there’s a great stadium there by all accounts and it’s there thanks to the foresight of the Bears. They planned it and they were going to be the Central Coast Bears and thanks to powers that be they’ve never gotten to use it as intended.

So you want to hamstring the Panthers and boost the other grand finalist you have predicted?

You might be right about moving the GF from Sydney but I don’t see it happening.

Perhaps settling on a number is the way to go be it 18 or 20 or back to 16 but removing licenses from badly performing clubs and giving them to new entities/clubs?

Is a try worth risking a severe neck or spinal injury? Three burning questions the NRL must answer

Hi Maxtruck.
1. I didn’t say i didn’t like it I said I said I was concerned about the possibility of it going to far. I have been watching league since 1991 season and even back then there were players who would stretch and dive for the line DJ Halligan was one playing on the wing for the Bears and was it Herron for the St George team that used to do it too?
2. Read my words I said I noticed the proliferation of black I never said I didn’t like it at all. It is just some team jerseys don’t work with certain combination. And Enoch Powell was concerned when it came to the level of melanin levels in your skin rather than the qualities of the person.
3. Why 16? Why not 14? why not remove GC and Sths?

Waldron.

Ah Hello Yes I did because it is being dicussed on this page. You just want to argue. It is possible to have or start a discussion without having an opinion on it. What problems have I caused? None What drama have I caused? None. Except you getting worked up for no reason. If you and I mean you want to have strong opinions that is fine write your own article on the topic.

I did have strong opinion. Just on the expansion portion of my article.

@ Waldron
I think you are another playing the man and not the ball. So let me respond
You said at the end of your statement
“If you think there should be a discussion, cool, start the discussion”, that is exactly what I did do I started the discussion and drew attention to what could be an issue. Further you said “but at no point in your article or even in the comments do you even come close to providing even the start of a solution” I don’t have a solution why ask for a solution when all Im doing is asking is it a problem firstly and if it is, infact a risk,is it a risk too far?

You are playing the man and not the ball. At no point in that section of my article did I call for that type of try to be banned. I merely asked the question. Risk is part of life but so is minimizing harm.

Is a try worth risking a severe neck or spinal injury? Three burning questions the NRL must answer

You may well be right but the question is worth asking.
Risks are there in other sports I agree but the NRL has a duty of care and should at least look into it.

@ Nat
“I don’t think we will see a new team even announced until the next broadcast deal is close.” Given their history of slowness I fear you are more likely correct than not.
I still maintain giving a new team time to prepare and having them in for a year before the next renewal would work as a sweetener to generate interest in the next TV rights period.
I don’t think “they will be paying for the new team themselves” 1 year of slightly reorganised grant money will noy make a huge difference. And if the new team is relying on NRL money to get by then I dont think that team/bid should get past the initial meeting. Any new team should be a financially independent identity. Your also correct the “next team will likely be a new destination (outside of Qld & NSW)”. I would go with Perth.

Tony you are obviously a wise man!
The NRL should look into these things, not to bring in a big stick but just a discussion to see what is safe and what isn’t

Is a try worth risking a severe neck or spinal injury? Three burning questions the NRL must answer

Big Gordon Yes we are looking at the same issue from two different angles. I maintain that caution is the norm and I advocate for a different approach. There have been 26 seasons in the NRL era and we have had 2 expansions or 1 if you look at the Titans as a pure exercise in re establishing the previous incarnations of a GC footy club. These came at season 10 and season 26. Where would league be now if the administrators of the 80’s had been so cautious? No Canberra No Bronco’s No Knights not to mention Steelers and the 1st GC team the seagulls. And I maintain that the NRL should look at expanding and if a new team isn’t working not be afraid to remove it as you said there are no shortage of bidders wanting to be part of the action.

Is a try worth risking a severe neck or spinal injury? Three burning questions the NRL must answer

Big G.
You are correct in your point and history shows that snails move quicker than the NRL has traditionally on expansion. But that was the thrust of my argument that I hope I got across and my opinion that the time of inactivity and ‘kicking the can down the road’ should stop. I would like them, to use another often used cliche, and ‘strike while the iron is hot’.
I think regardless of where on the table the Dolphins finished their inaugural season it should be considered a success for the club. More importantly it was a success for the NRL in general with the amount of coverage and discussion that they generated, it would be interesting to know if it lifted viewership and attendance?
Those highly paid designers of new jumpers do not need encouragement and especially not to go overboard on pink in regards to the Barbie movie. We don’t want another repeat of the Marvel themed fiasco do we?
