'Always knew it would get really ugly': RA chief's strange admission as World Cup budget blow out revealed

Which he is entitled to do because, you know, he donates his salary to fund indigenous and women’s rugby.

The question is – why is his salary taking precedence over the game? And despite this largesse from Hamish, RA still overspent on the RWC. There appears to be an accounting problem.

As previously stated on the Roar, I’d rather a Chairman that really needs the money instead of someone who thinks it would be really cool to run rugby as a hobby.

Bad decisions are always made by the Board. Good decisions are usually only made by the Chairman. According to some.

Well he checked in with the referee. “What am I supposed to do if he calls me a…….”

Do what you did last time Tom, nothing.

I always knew that there would be a moment like this where it would get really ugly and all I’d say to all of the rugby fans and the stakeholders – certainly, again, I apologise for what happened through the World Cup.

Thank you. Resignation accepted.

There is some good coverage on the BBC Sport webpage. A lot of discussion about greatest innings and some worthy competition. Good point made that Viv Richards’ n.o. 189* is the greatest innings remembering the size of the grounds, the quality of the bats and the lack of fielding restrictions back in 1984. More analysis required before bestowing the ‘greatest’ tag.

And I’m not saying for a moment it isn’t the greatest just querying the speed at which it is being heralded.

Yes, yes, yes, the aqueduct, the roads, the sanitation, we get it. You are the cradle of civilisation and sport. But beer? Them’s fighting words right there, maaaaaate.

We do have Great White sharks and the Great Australian Bight though, pun intended. I think I recently saw that Great Whites are not so great when encountering a pod of orcas. Yowser!

Given the hype around racial vilification and the use of sledging in sport, the existence of TMO, microphones on field, the high profile of the game and the potential sanctions that could be imposed, what do you think is the most likely scenario – A South African player takes it upon himself to inexplicably racially vilify an English player in English or something was said that was either misheard or misinterpreted or probably not spoken in English?
I don’t doubt for the second that Afrikaans or another language is used by SA players on the field.

Sam Cane cops ban for World Cup final red card

Could a journo please expose the perpetual half-truth that McLennan donates his pay to women’s and indigenous rugby? Whilst it sounds generous and certainly factual, is it not also true that he is more than handsomely remunerated by his other offices held that he can afford to forego his RA salary without causing his accountant to so much as blink. Probably gets a sizeable tax deduction from it.

Rather than laud him for his philanthropy, I’d rather RA appoint someone competent and that doesn’t make rugby administration (he’s not playing or coaching it FFS), all about themselves and isn’t in the role as a ‘hobby’. The primary reason for donating his salary is so that he can tell everyone ‘I donate my salary’.

I mean even Mrs McLennan is in on the act claiming her Hamish is the only person in the world that can unfvkc what he fvkced up.

He’s only in the spotlight because the media keeps putting him there. Time to focus on Australian rugby and how the mess is going to be fixed. Chairman next.

SPIRO ZAVOS: 'Crazy brave' Boks are a team for the ages - but key decisions cleared their path to glory

I think it’s sad to see commentary so focussed on the refereeing. Whinging has become an art form as evidenced by this article. It’s cathartic but it doesn’t change the result nor does it reflect well on our sportsmanship. And it’s grossly unfair on the refereeing team. Throw social media into the mix and coaches who should know better and it has become an unmanageable mess. (just imagine for a moment getting death threats from morons just because you choose to referee rugby) Articles like this, so soon after the fact, inflame not inform, because it is opinion not a ruling. The referees on the pitch make the rulings and we are obliged to respect that, but not necessarily agree. There are many, many moments in a game the result can turn on, singling out refereeing decisions blinds us.

Rugby’s laws continue to evolve with the new focus on avoiding head contact. Players and coaches have to adapt and so do fans. Whilst I would love to see consistency in interpretation, that will likely never happen to the extent that every pundit or fan is satisfied, as they commonly see refereeing as an influence that excuses their team for not being good enough.

As a neutral, I will remember the RWC quarter finals and one of the semi finals as titanic tussles and that goes doubly so for the final where the ABs almost pulled off the impossible. At the end of the day though, they weren’t good enough to win it and SA was. Given SA thrashed the ABs in the lead up to the tournament, I saw nothing that detracted from the Bok’s deserved RWC triumph. They persevered.

Ranting about refereeing years after the fact will give us all ulcers and is like a broken pencil, pointless.

SPIRO ZAVOS: 'Crazy brave' Boks are a team for the ages - but key decisions cleared their path to glory

You would think that due diligence is the first thing a coach does, as in “What am I working with here” but I think the reality is EJ was dumped from England before the RWC and RA immediately offered him another opportunity to coach at a RWC. IMO it was a decision based on opportunity and nothing more. The spin about commitment is hogwash and tellingly EJ was caught out almost immediately with his Freudian slip during a podcast.

But due diligence is supposed to work both ways which brings us back to the original RA pursuit of EJ by what sounds like predominantly Hamish McLennan. A big decision not thought through nearly enough and appearing to be monumental incompetence at Board level.
