Yeah if you put Wood, Henry, King, Clark, Crouch & Butler into the saints side they would look better – as you say Wood was great for them last year (a bit like Acres for the Blues) and Henry looks like he could really be a player and has that pace.

Wood, King & Clark are all likely to come in this week with Henry next week – hopefully the damage hasn’t been done by then.

St Kilda in peril yet again - but are their problems due to Lyon's coaching or the quality of the cattle?

I remember back in 2014 & 2015 being berated on here because I argued that part of the reason the Blues were terrible was because just when they were recovering from the salary cap drama the AFL brought in 2 new teams and instead of getting a late top 10 pick they were picking Matthew Watson at pick 18 which was more like pick 28 after all the “pre-draft” picks were taken out.

But as bad as the Blues got they were always able to lean on being “a big club” and land a Judd or a Docherty or Cerra. The Saints are stuck having to offer overs to mid tier players.

Hopefully the Saints will turn it around (half my household are saints supporters) but no doubt they will once again bank the 4 points against the BLues

I know VFL is a very different level but Dow’s clearance work at that level was absolutely brilliant – if he can get some game time with Marshall I think he would be a valuable addition as he is an inside player with burst speed which the Saints simply don’t have

Harry McKay must improve his goal kicking? He has kicked 18.9 for the season.
What is not mentioned is that he is currently averaging career highs for disposals, marks, tackles (double his previous best), goal assists, inside 50’s, clearances, score involvements, intercepts, contested marks & contested possession

The crucial cogs of AFL's Round 8: Which players need to be the difference makers?

To me it is a bit of a mix of both, there are some holes in the list which have been exacerbated by Kings inability to consistently play football this year but the big thing is their game plan relies very heavily on having elite foot skills – when they are hitting their targets and running hard forward in a wave they look unstoppable but too often they miss a target and get hurt the other way.
It certainly doesn’t help that without King (or often with King) they are almost entirely reliant on Marshall to be the outlet target when hemmed inside defensive 50 as player like Membrey, Caminitti & Owens are just too small to provide the big pack mark McKay often provide the blues which allows them to reset the ground.
It also has to be remembered they haven’t been far away in most their losses this year, largely against decent opposition
As an aside I think Dow cold prove a handy pick up for the Saints – his problem at the Blues was largely we had other players who could play his best role better (ie Cripps) where at the Saints if he is just allowed to be a clearance and burst player he should be able to release the likes of Hill on the outside.

PS – what level of education did Lindsay Fox achieve?

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

You really should put that “double down” line into the full context in which it was said.p, remembering that even Dunstall said he wouldn’t get through a preseason these days
And I am glad you bring up my discussion of other topics, I am regularly criticised on here for using too many stats – that is because if I claim a player has poor skills I reference his disposal efficiency, if I say they are an outside player I refer ne contested possession, tackles, 1%ers etc. I attempt to back ever opinion with verifiable fact.
What I don’t do is question the character of a player who is doing something very few people can do.
You have never met me, have no idea about me beyond what I post and yet claim to know everything about me, you have never met Williams don’t know what he does every week to play at the highest level (or overcome severe injuries or personal trauma) but believe you are entitled to criticise his character. They really do give out a God complex when you become a doctor
As for double standards – again look how you reacted when you felt your character was being questioned and consider if that’s a double standard, I think most will see it was.
Now the proceedings are closed.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

Strange then taht he didn’t either ask Cripps to get out or Cameron to get behind the mark

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

Well, lets just recap, you accused me of getting personal after what I felt was clearly a joke (after all SANFL is hardly a bottom rung comp), you refused to accept my position was a joke despite the logical inconsistencies of stating I am “someone who doesn’t believe anyone should be called soft” and yet believing I called you/SANFL player soft, you then insulted my education level and intelligence while going on some lengthy rants and more than 24 hors later you still can’t let it go – so yes it is pretty obvious from what you have written that the is not only a strong correlation but a definite causation.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

OK Doc – you wrote a nonsensical sentence on purpose – well done you. 😔

I am not in a pickle, a jam or any other food stuff related quandry – argument has been consistent the whole way through not matter how much you have deflected.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

Deflecting again Doc – becoming a real pattern of behaviour when you can see you have made an error but don’t want to admit it.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

“That would have a different effect” Yep it makes sense now.

“reads horribly” Can’t read worse than the original that nonsensically reads as though I am suggesting I have a picture of Adam Bandt on my wall

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

But you still think I got personal because I suggested/insinuated/implied/alluded to you being soft. You still got the s..ts up because of that.
Again hopefully you remember how upset you got next time you are tempted to call an AFL player soft.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

Nope, I lightheartedly insinuated it yesterday which I assumed was what you accused me of “getting personal” for – if you are only just figuring out what you took personally yesterday today I really do worry about your critical thinking.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

“I don’t need to claim anything.” Good, so we finally agree you got upset at the lighthearted insinuation that you were soft – as I said earlier, hopefully you remember how upset you got next time you are tempted to call an AFL player soft.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

I did space out my points, even went in to edit it, that is how it came through.
Now I am not as educated as you but
““But someone who doesn’t believe anyone should be called soft” So “Macca”
“tends to suggest” So “Macca tends to suggest”
“you have a picture of Adam Bandt on your bedroom wall.” So Macca tends to suggest that Macca has a picture of Adam Bandt on Macca’s bedroom wall. You really happy with that sentence?
Now again, I am just a poor simpleton but I would think the sentence would make more sense like this:
The fact you are someone who doesn’t believe anyone should be called soft tends to suggest you have a picture of Adam Bandt on your bedroom wall” – see in this instance it is the “fact you are” that is doing the suggesting not “someone” who you then go on to frame as me? Can you see the difference?

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

You can deflect all you want Doc – but when you accuse someone of “getting personal” for a “tongue in cheek” comment it is really hard to claim you weren’t upset by the insinuation.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

“No, I can’t.” – Are you sure it is me who has an issue with critical thinking?
” anyone tolerant of self-righteous people who have earned the right to be self-righteous” except I said “I am giving more tolerance” and “I don’t really think anyone has a right to call an AFL player soft TBH” – so can you see the difference?
“But someone who doesn’t believe anyone should be called soft tends to suggest you have a picture of Adam Bandt on your bedroom wall.” It might be my lack of education but do you want to have another crack at that sentence?
Anyone who who wants to call other soft but throws the toys out of the cot at a joke questioning their “softness” probably has a poster of themselves on their bedroom wall.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

Now Doc, I am not claiming that “Your writing tells me everything about you and your probable education level.” but it is pretty obvious from your writing that there was a point at which you got riled and that was when you felt I “got personal” when I made this tongue in cheek comment ““After all that level is where players who are deemed “too soft” go to have great careers isn’t it?” which you clearly took offence to.

But I suppose that is just my simple uneducated view on things

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

“If you believe that self-righteous people feel they need to earn the right” Now I am clearly not as educated as you but I am not talking about what the self righteous ex players feel about their right, I am talking about how I feel about their right.
I am giving more tolerance to self righteous people who have a lived experience at the level than I am to self righteous people who haven’t – can you see the distinction?

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

Just for the record the definition of self righteous;
self-righteous
adjective disapproving (also selfrighteous)
UK /ˌselfˈraɪ.tʃəs/ US /ˌselfˈraɪ.tʃəs/

believing that your ideas and behaviour are morally better than those of other people.

To me if you played at AFL you have earned the right to believe your ideas on the game are better than those of people who haven’t played the game – that doesn’t mean your ideas are.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

OK Doc, I see you are deflecting, I am sorry I hurt your feelings by lightheartedly implying that you may have been “soft” – but perhaps you might remember how it made you completely lose you s..t before you accuse an AFL player of being “soft”

“You have yet to earn the right to use the term ‘irony’.” which is why I said “If only I had the critical thinking capacity to enjoy the irony” – after all I am only a poor simpleton with a bad education, I am just so lucky to have somebody who knows everything about me to help me learn.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

I love it, the bloke who thinks he can call players at a level he never got to “soft” is outraged that I got “personal” by jokingly suggesting players at his level are “soft” 😂

If only I had the critical thinking capacity to enjoy the irony

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

As I said if Doc feels he has earned the right to criticise the courage of a player like Williams, who has overcome both injury and personal hardship to compete at AFL level he can go for it, personally I don’t think I have earned that right.

AFL News: 'Given it my all' - Crows great announces retirement, big-money Blue 'not hard enough'

One more thing Doc, my simple mind is struggling to distinguish the difference between the discussion around a player being “soft” and and players “courage” youlist as one of the talents you wish to extend my logic to – can your super educated, critical thinking mind explain this difference to a poor simpleton like myself?
Also Doc, here is a test for your critical thinking skills I so terribly lack, why would I think because I didn’t play at AFL level I lacked the credibility to call an AFL player soft, but I did think I had the credibility to call SANFL players soft, despite the fact I didn’t play at that level, that seems illogical to me but as you say I am just a poorly educated simpleton, unlike you a Doctor, the font of all knowledge
