VOTE: Pick your Australian XI for the Ashes

OK, let’s give this a shot

Richardson

VOTE: Pick your Australian XI for the Ashes

But isn’t that what Labuschagne is averaging and he’s being picked. And it was the average that M Marsh got to as well.

26 is the new 50!

If you are taking the 10 in Canberra, then it’s only between Renshaw and Marnus for the spare batting slot

After demolishing Sri Lanka at home, here's how Australia's Ashes squad is shaping up

It sounds like Smith at least may be sent on the Australia A tour rather than go to the World Cup. This seems a good strategy to me. There are others who can match him in the ODI format, but we have nothing to compare in the test arena, unless Greg Chappell is retiring as a selector in order to put the pads back on.

Given the schedule I’d me amazed if we can keep the same three pace bowlers for all five tests.

I’ll also be amazed if Broad and Anderson both go the distance.

It’s an interesting issue you’ve raised. When wade or Nevill were in the team they didn;t score any quicker than Paine, so I doubt we could change that.

What you could do is swap Starc and Cummins back around. Starc is the attacking batsmen. that way you don;t have Paine and Cummins after each other in the order.

I suspect that the brittle batting order has put both Paine and Cummins into this mindset and they are finding it hard to get out of. I believe Paine can attack (he used to open in limited overs games) and I’ve seen Cummins hit some huge sixes.

Nasty… but funny.

And if you picked Glen Maxwell in the squad you could go with the four quicks and have Maxi send down a few overs of spin to keep the over rate up.

To be fair Ronan for some of us the joy was scraped off by a piece of yellow sandpaper. And it had been hard to be joyful about our team for a while, given their nasty style of play.

It’s been difficult for some to put those feelings aside, even though this is a fundamentally different team and the behaviour has been exemplary. It was also complicated by some head scratching selection decisions that were hard to come to terms with.

I’ve been pretty excited actually, it was one of the more interesting summers for a long time.

“Yeah, but it was” …the laziest cricket argument going

No Josh Hazlewood love at all? His test record is still pretty damn good and he’s four years more experienced than last time around in England.

It’s certainly still the “Northern Union”. The continuing inclusion of Catalans as well as Toronto in the Championship bodes well though. Baby steps. The London Broncos have been in the lower divisions for 5 years.

Super League Round 1: The wrap

And now “Mend-A-Hose Jungle”. Are you just making this up?

I just couldn’t get past “Totally Wicked Stadium”. That’s fantastic! OK, I’ll read the rest now …

I do agree that Richardson looks the real deal.

Except we were given no chance to assess Burns or Patterson against India so we use what we have.

It also seems plain that Travis Head has grown through that tough experience and looks better for it.

With David Gower as well, flakey but so elegant

What about bowlers, Michael Holding obviously.

Greg Chappell saw the writing on the wall, and hopefully the mess his panel has made this summer

I hear the ICC have justified their 1 game suspension of Holder on the basis of “it’s just a dead rubber and it’s only against England”.

“Yeah, but it was” …the laziest cricket argument going

Exactly my point. You can’t talk up one player’s performance and talk down another’s against the same opposition.

JT13 could probably biff them a long way and I reckon Andrew Fifita might have a mean googly.

“Yeah, but it was” …the laziest cricket argument going

“When a batting line-up that goes an entire year without scoring more than one century suddenly knocks out three in an innings, you’re probably better off looking at the other end of the pitch for answers as to how and why.”

True, but you also might consider that of those three centuries, two were scored by batsmen with career averages over 40 that were overlooked for most of the summer.

So I would say you could look at both ends.

He still has claims (along with Border, Waugh and Ponting) to be our second greatest batsman. the best on drive I’ve ever seen (with apologies to Mark Waugh).

Burns is a bit of a nicker as well, so the door is not shut. However Burns’ test and Shield record should make him the front runner.

Bancroft is the interesting one. If he has a big second half of the Shield, I could see Langer pushing hard for him.

Five talking points from Australia vs Sri Lanka second Test

I believe there is also an Australia A tour before the Ashes. The test specialists should go on that tour. Heck, you could even considering giving Smith and Warner some match practice.

Do we care more about the World Cup or the Ashes?

James, you have hit your straps with your first few articles this season, well done on another good read.
