NRL grand final player ratings: Melbourne Storm

😁

😊

The pass was actually a bit wild – receiver had to leap quite high to catch it!!

Cleary is a Koala in that commentary box.

Going off the Telstra Tracker, Papenhuyzen hit 35.6kh/h yesterday.

That equates to a 10.11s/100m. And that’s holding a footy.

He’d torch Usain Bolt if he got him on a slow day!!

Absolutely. FB should be one of your best defenders in terms of 1-1 tackling, positioning & speed…

Exactly what you need defending the wide spaces of a mid-field scrum.

“even with lots of ball and territory the Panthers looked frantic and were pushing passes with no real structure to create opportunities”

Exactly. And the #6 & #7 are ultimately accountable for that.

Cleary definitely did not play a 7/10. The intercept hurt them more than his late individual try & the rest of his game was meek/missing. Sad but true.

NRL grand final player ratings: Penrith Panthers

“Just one of the four tackles he attempted was effective, with two outright missed, and he made three errors – including an absolutely crucial knock-on inside the last five minutes.”

Yet he still gets a 7/10??!!

He never had a chance because Munster was about six metres away from both the decoy runner & the kicker. Only *possible* obstruction was on Bromwich (the closer defender) but he had already started to sidestep laterally towards the infield to cover the decoy runner, and, as a result, never got either obstructed or close enough to tackle kicker.

11/10 & Three Thumbs UP!!! 😊

Daily Telegraph accidentally reveals NRL grand final winner before kick-off

Cant understand why we/they/it can’t get the bloody ABC commentary to Sync. Put man on the moon but….

"I'm always honest", says Phil Gould who reckons his NRL grand final call wasn't biased

The Penrith tactic of targetting little Hughes with massive Kikau was a fantastic one. He was monstering him every time…

Then dropping the pill. Hate to see his stat sheet. Burgess-esque. (Twins).

The Storm's NRL stranglehold grows stronger, but Panthers are 2021 favourites

He did do exceptionally well. AFL Grab, fell over, sprung up, binned Mansour like yesterday’s custard & outsprinted 3 very enthusiastic chasers. Amazing stuff.

Exactly. All the expert ex players were blowing up, but no one from Melbourne got near the kicker. Bromwich had faded to his inside to cover the decoy runner & Munster was miles away from both decoy runner & the kicker.

The camera angle from behind defensive goal posts captures it perfectly.

Dunno why Kikau didn’t video challenge that one. Of the mountain of errors he made yesterday, that was actually not his.

Then Penrith wasted their challenge on that other absolute slop.

It is a blight on the game. In the regular season I reckon in any given game both sides would throw one AT LEAST one forward pass every 2nd set. Needs to be addressed.

A whole lotta Origin Rookies & Origin 2nd Graders. NSW have a star-studded line up of in-form players. If NSW can get it anywhere near together they will wipe the floor with Qld in all three games. And I will be delighted.

Agree. Except nobody ever needs anything to do with Fourex Gold.

Reckon you might be swinging in the breeze on that one champ….

Some subtle changes the NRL should consider

Papallii was your best forward for Game 3?

He only played 36 minutes.

Seven talking points from State of Origin Game 3

We won the series & it was Nathan Cleary’s first, but:

He was a long way behind DCE, Maloney & Munster tonight.

Lots to improve.

Seven talking points from State of Origin Game 3

Some dramatic moments and outcomes.

Boring but decisive:

NSW could not get out of our defensive end in first half. Why?

Poor Long kicking game (very very poor) and our forwards did not stand up in attack or defence. How many carries did our backs have to make? Where were the forwards to bend the line with the ball? And forcing Qld back when they had it?

Two poor drop-outs from Maloney did not help.

Our desperate line defence was outstanding, but in other aspects, the vital aspects of Origin, we were bad.

Also: Fittler made poor use of substitutes tonight. Paul Vaughan deserved more minutes & could’ve had a massive impact had he reappeared in 2nd half against almost-as-tired Qld.

Great Game.

Billy Slater = Wally Lewis Medal = Medal is tarnished.

Sims was one of our best on ground tonight.

Except for that rather large, rather idiotic act.

Seven talking points from State of Origin Game 3

Outside men should always know it’s on. That’s their job.

Wingers must not get outsmarted by playmakers on their OWN side.

Six talking points from State of Origin Game 1

Chambers kick was poor, he shouldn’t be kicking much, if at all.

Morgan should have licence to do anything, any time. He’s the next best thing to Thurston that Qld have (funny that). Because he’s good everywhere he struggles to hold a spot anywhere. Shame for him. Good for us (NSW). Will be interesting to see how he’s used in Game 2 if Slater is fit & back in team.

Few will agree, but I consider Morgan a bigger attacking threat than Inglis.

If Inglis is just there to put hits on (while conceding penalties) then he’s wasting a jumper & tarnishing his legacy.

ORIGIN 1 RESULT: NSW Blues youngsters just too good for Queensland at the MCG

Roberts copped the palm, stayed in the fight (& yes, with assistance of others) contained Inglis, brought him to ground and on that play he did nothing. Zero. Like the rest of the game. The NSW Winger had enough faith in Roberts defence not to get sucked in to engage Inglis then beaten with flick pass (as we’ve seen umpteen times (Darius Boyd!) over the years). Roberts backed himself to show Inglis a bit of space wide then just pigdog him to the ground eventually. If you’re smaller but faster than your opponent it’s a good tactic.

As for Inglis hot on Tom T: he was Three Metres offside and immediately conceded a penalty. Yeah, great shot on Trbjc, now turn around and jog thirty metres back and defend the next six tackles. If you’re gonna congratulate guys for conceding dumb penalties just to put shots on you may as well go high for the head – at least it’ll stupefy your opponent a bit & perhaps dampen their effect. It didn’t do squat to Tom T. He scored a great try shortly after.

If Inglis’ role for Qld is now reduced to thuggish, penalty-warehouse enforcer then NSW will be stoked. He’s been so, so much more than that in the past, and the hits he put on (against smallest players on field) reek of desperation to “make an impact” while not actually making an impact…
