Lol!

Why did NSW pick - and then ignore - Daniel Tupou

Agree. Cronk plays and it’s 2 zip. Another year of kicking stones for NSW fans and players.

A tribute to a great rugby league dynasty

There was plenty of time spent in the QLD 20. The backs didn’t need to see the ball with great back line sweeps, but NSW just had to position themselves on the 3rd or 4th tackles on the right of the park and bomb away to left corner. But only once did they try to do this. I blame Farah for not directing play towards the right side, I blame the halves for not calling or seeing it as well, and I blame Loz for not sending the message via the trainers to exploit QLD’s glaring weakness. It was summed up why we’ve lost 8 series.

Yes. With Lawrence on the bench, he can add impact and the utility value coaches often desire. A good move.

A letter to Wests Tigers CEO Grant Mayer

Your comments regarding the media scrutiny and reporting on Mick Potter at season’s end is spot on, and something I didn’t consider.

I would doubt Mayer selects. But he’d have pull at the club, and more than likely the ear of one or two. Plus his name “Mayer” suited the purposes of the article. Agree, Lullia isn’t an improvement, but considering that Lawrence’s side seems to see ball from both Brooks and Teddy, maybe an alternative option could be for Lawrence and Simona to switch sides. Tigers could get more out of Simons that way.

Cheers, they seem glaringly obvious to a lot of people. Not just you and me old son.

Your points are valid too, The eye. But I wouldn’t mind Tufaka coming into Lawrence’s spot or even Akouloa. He doesn’t offer much in the way of extra pace, but he certainly offloads better than Chris.

Thank you champion!

Ricky Stuart and the Raiders' last crusade

True. I’ve been duded. Email the editors.

Ricky Stuart and the Raiders' last crusade

It is widely speculated that Rick’s contribution to the 2002 premiership was just putting the witches-hats out for Gus.

I can’t wait for that show. It’s being shown on the comedy channel right?

His salary has to be one of the most laughable points in Rugby League.

I completely agree. Wallace was perfect while Locky was there. It was a bit tough for Wallace once the great man retired.

It's clear who the next NRL supercoach is

I don’t think they’re a top 8 team on paper. They have a team with a back like that’s top 8, but that forward pack is the problem. I’m not sure if it’s Price’s fault or someone else’s, but recruitment has been woeful during his time. It was better this season, but did someone forget about the front row? Dragons are a fringe top 8 side at best with those forwards.
Someone there better get on the phone before June 30 or the season is over.

The Price is wrong, Steve

Mr Woodward, I could not have summed it better. I, for one, am extremely disappointed with Marshall’s decision to go to the Dragons.
I don’t know how much of Benji’s decision was based on his wife’s career, but I have a hunch it’s not as big as what it has been made out to be by some of the media reports. Personally, I feel Marshall’s decision is one that reeks of arrogance, greed, cowardice and short sightedness.

1) Arrogance – He still doesn’t really believe that he was that bad in his final years at the Tigers. He spoon fed that to the media because it seems genuine and would feel it’s what the public want to hear. If he thought he was that bad, he go to a club that was strong and that could improve/support him.

2) Greed – A move to Melbourne may have limited his commercial or media opportunities, but choosing a club that has a 5/8 as its chief play-maker when he clearly didn’t like playing 7 when at the Tigers, stinks of hypocrisy and leads one to the conclusion that “other factors” persuaded him to go Red and Whites.

3) Cowardice – He chose a club that has a coach under pressure. In fact, his other choice – the Sharks – even had a coach who wasn’t a coach. What does Melbourne have? A strong, dominant coach who drives his players – they don’t drive him. This was weak on Marshall’s part. The Melbourne system would have tested him, but I chose not to do that.

4) Short sightedness – To go to an environment where he wasn’t the top dog or biggest story would have been good for his footy. And what’s good for his footy would have ultimately been good for his pocket. It would have been a case of short term pain (money wise) for long term gain. With a good season a two, he could have commanded more, plus the off field benefits would have been huge. Everyone likes a winner, including sponsors. His 500k with the Dragons may be good for now, but how will his Rugby League legacy fair? And for that, his long term career after football.

It could have been much different.

Benji needed the Storm to resurrect his career

I agree with this article. Gould came in with the right approach and has stuck to it, despite the lack of instant success. He made tough calls and hired a good coach in Ivan Cleary. Cleary has been given the benefits of time and authority to complete his task, something Gould should be given credit for. Too often clubs are guilty of caving into pressure due to a lack of spine and poor long term vision. Both Cleary and the club will reap the rewards for such a determined and clear approach.
In years to come, I have no doubt that Cleary will be looked upon as one of the leading coaches in the game – a Bennett or Hasler type – a result that will be a credit to Cleary’s ability as a coach, as well as Gould’s vision and metal as an administrator.

Panthers blueprint is one for rivals to follow

Hahaha! Picking Sutton does make a lot of sense.

B-b-b-Bird, bird, bird, (Greg) Bird is the word

I like a lot of what you say. Excellent.

B-b-b-Bird, bird, bird, (Greg) Bird is the word

The don’t weaken one position for another argument has merit in almost every league conversation, except in this instance. The halves have been a weak position for NSW for a number of years. With the number 7 a given (unfortunately), we have to look at how best to use the remaining position of 5/8. This means not attempting what has already been tried.
Bird won’t weaken the 5/8 role, he may play it differently, but he won’t weaken it. Previous players to have played in the role have failed to live up to their club form. So what’s there to lose? What it does do is give, however, the opportunity to select another edge runner with grunt into the side, someone of the Sims ilk.

I agree Bird has zero chance. Loz has pretty much confirmed that. However, with Pearce being an auto selection – and it is a problem that won’t seem to change this year – NSW need to re-think their 5/8 selection philosophy. Out of the options you put forward, Sutton is best suited followed by J Reynolds. Sutton wins though because of his size and strength. J Reynolds is good and could be considereds Greg Bird lite.

Nice to see you found this place, TeeeeeMac.

The stars have aligned - Benji must go to the Storm

Bert, truly outstanding piece of literature. But it looks as though you may have sent the place into meltdown.

Sydney-centric approach is killing rugby league

Agree… mostly. I believe Scott Prince was a high quality organiser – a dominant half – and we all know how that went. So yes, on the basis that he needs a quality half to flourish, you’re exactly right.
