Stewie Loewe had a very strong set up hands as well.

Masters of the Air: The ten greatest AFL 'speckies' of the 21st century - and #2 wasn't even Mark of the Year!

Yes, lets schedule a minimum of 2 tests a year against Afghanistan, that will change the current situation & return things to the way things were.

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

The younger generation of emerging players often need to have seen competitive teams & players to inspire them onto bigger & better things. You must understand that the West Indies hasn’t won a test series against Australia since 1992/93. That is about 15 years before any 16yo cricketer currently playing was born. Emerging players will almost always be more inspired by the huge T20 contracts rather Test history from past generations.

West Indies playing for their future as a legitimate Test nation with memory fading of long lost Calypso glory days

India have been paying Test Cricket for over 90 years & have a 1.4B population with huge stadiums. Pakistan has been playing Tests for over 70 years with a 230M population. Totally different ball park Playmaker. Test Cricket is not developing in those countries, it is already a religion. Sri Lanka aren’t bad but they are only successful in Test when they are playing Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland etc. BTW, what do you rate as competitive?

How Test cricket can shake off five stages of grief to not only survive but soldier on for another 150 years

Give me a example of one of these countries you describe?

You don’t think it will cost too much? Getting some of these countries to be competitive at Test level is a 10 year project. To get Test Cricket to work in these countries some basics are going to need to be met including home crowd attendance. The Afghanistan/GDP per person is $USD370pa. In Australia it is $USD60,000 pa per person. Unless you are offering free entry, no one is going to turn up to watch the games. How exciting is an empty cricket ground? Imagine what you are going have to pay topline coaching & support staff to live there with there families in Afghanistan? Never going to happen. As soon as an emerging star appears, the IPL will be throwing megabucks at them & they will be staying in 5 star hotels. They won’t be hanging around to play in a test team that get’s beaten in 3 days by NZ or Australia.

I agree, they are great grubs. I will never forgive Jeff Kennett for opening his big mouth after the 2008 GF win. We got lucky on the day & instead of being gracious with the win, he chose to impersonate Eddie McGuire. It took us about 5 years to beat you blokes again. Good luck in 2024, but not too much!!

Mitchell to miss start of Hawks' pre-season due to serious illness, to have 'phased return' to club

It’s already there, people are just not interested in it. Otherwise we would not posting these articles all the time.

Good comments. SA is a strange one. Cricket is their traditional national summer sport which is rich in history. I know there is a wide divide there between the rich & the poor but their should be plenty of people with the money to attend international games.

Cricket has grow or Test cricket has to grow? Two different issues. Creating interest in Test Cricket in Zimbabwe & Afghanistan & making them competitive at Test level is going to cost an enormous amount of money. The best players coming through are always going to be chasing the best money. That is T20 at this point in time. Spreading the game globally? How much money do you believe we should spend to promote Test Cricket in the USA?

Unlike most of the cricket diehards on this website, Test Cricket does not really appeal to a lot of people in a lot of countries. Although I really enjoy Test Cricket, I am not going to sit in judgement of whiteball cricket fans. Although we can post our ideas on this site of how we can widen it’s appeal, I think the market is going to dictate it’s sustainability in most countries. Cash injections by Australia, India & England will have little affect.

Do you hate them more than those Geelong Grubs?

Mitchell to miss start of Hawks' pre-season due to serious illness, to have 'phased return' to club

But will it make them competitive long term? Is their enough national interest in test cricket in these countries? Will they continuously require funds to keep them competitive? And what is it really going to achieve?

Very simple concept to state that the big 3 should invest in the smaller nations. For these nations, they are going to need organised Sheffield Shield like competitions, professional coaches & associations & decent crowd attendances in their own countries to make them competitive in Test Cricket. Some of these countries are categorised as white-ball cricket countries. Their own countrymen & media are not interested in watching a five day test match. I am interested in an estimate of how much money you think will need to spent in each of these countries to achieve this? And who is going to dictate to the richer nations how much each will need to contribute?

NZ & Pakistan have definitely been competitive for a very long time. My comments were related to the teams that have traditionally been very strong test nations, it’s really only South Africa & West Indies have fallen away in recent times. Sri Lanka have have had some good series from time to time. But you couldn’t classify them as a traditional long-time Test cricket nation.

Talk is cheap: Only real investment can stop Test cricket ending up like rugby league

Just keep in mind that besides the West Indies & South Africa, none of these other countries were ever competitive Test playing nations. The only thing that has changed is that we see some very talented individuals from these countries sometimes starring at T20 level. Even with more money, there is no guarantee of them being competitive at Test level. A lot of cricket playing nations are not wealthy countries & are always going to struggle to support professional cricket competitions like the Sheffield Shield & the BBL which flows onto regular new talent emerging with internal T20 competitions gaining great media coverage & crowd attendance. An example is Sri Lanka with a GDP per capita of USD$4K compared to Australia USD$64K. So whilst we might be able to subsidise the current players wages, building up their internal competitions is a different story. Moses Henriques has never been able to secure a spot in the Australian Test team but has earn’t a very good living being the NSW State Captain, Sixers Captain as well as playing in the IPL. In so many cricket nations he would be playing Test cricket. But the ICC can not replicate the opportunities he has had to make a professional living playing cricket within his own country whilst not being of international standard player within it. I would love to see there is an easy answer, unfortunately there is not.

We must be a tremendous cricket nation if we are the Test Champions, ODI World Cup Champions, holding the Ashes, winning our test matches whist playing our 2nd tier players???

'This isn't working' - Pakistan tail wags as Aussie tactics questioned, Albo, Warner's dad whack 'scumbag' baggy green thief

Playing Test Cricket for Australia, England, India etc is going to earn you big coin. Not the case in most cricket nations. What sort of money would Rashid Khan be on if he wasn’t playing T20? No easy answer for Test Cricket in all counties, sometimes the market is going to dictate the outcome.

Sounds nice in theory but how is it going work? An Afghani batsman playing in an empty cricket ground in Barbados earning the same $$ as Pat Cummins bowling in front of a sell out MCG crowd? Where is the Afghani batsman’s wage going to come from?

Aussie players are fighting to get into our test team & numerous people are advocating we should be resting our best players for the upcoming Windies tests. What sort of message would that be sending to Test Cricket fans around the world?

Oh well. We all have some baggage.
