GKL,

Given I’m the idiot who predicted we would win the RWC. I’m perhaps the wrong person to ask to come up with realistic practical solutions to these questions.

SB,
Agreed. Although I believe Tom does show that rare indefinable quality of calm competence under pressure. But if he was from Victoria and his father Joe Average he would probably be pursuing his dreams as a cricketer.

KPM,

You could submit one of my rambling incoherent posts as an article, except that would lead to fewer people coming to the ROAR looking for relevant informed content.

Hi Don,

Sound reasoning and fair points. What you say about Grant is true enough. You have a reasonable perspective and I don’t discount your experience from QLD.

I would say though, I’m speaking more generally about the cumulative effect of what is mostly an unconscious bias and disproportionate investment towards NSW and QLD, that pervades all levels of rugby development in Australia.

I have no empirical evidence except my own anecdotal experience having come from WA to believe raw talent exists everywhere but does not have the same chance to succeed. I’m old and have enough arthritis in my joints to remember that in 1987 the runner-up in the U16 National Championships was WA. However, in the succeeding 36 years, apparently excluding John Welborn and Kyle Godwin there has been no homegrown raw talent coming through WA that could have been identified and nurtured through to the highest levels of Rugby in Australia.

Yes, life has been difficult carrying such a large chip on my shoulder. I know, cry me a river and I should build a bridge.

Go well, Sir.

Bliksem,
I think we speak the same language. Unfortunately it’s not the one spoken in Sydney.

Hi Don,

You put your finger squarely on the problem as I see it.

The margins of making it to the senior ranks of proffessional sport are small. Some players benefit for that little bit extra that often makes all the difference.

I agree with you.

“NPC may have got him over the line into the Hurricanes squad, some inside running through personal and family contacts got him the opportunity.”

The problem with developement of Rubgy in Australia is that the “key” personal and family contacts that matter reside in NSW and QLD.

If you are looking for some light reading to help put you to sleep at night you may take a look at my extended repsone to GKL.

GKL,
Your questions are valid ones.
“there is a problem in identifying talent and selections”
Answer: yes
“Does RA select players on form?”
Answer: No
“Does RA select coaches on form?”
Answer: No
Long answer:
Playing club rugby for Cottesloe, NRC for Perth Spirt, GRR and the Western Force makes you all but invisible to the powers that be. You have to be from NSW or QLD or play/coach in NSW or QLD AND have “connections” to the right people.

I have posted before that on a per capitia basis WA has the least number of professional codes chasing signatures of talented youth. (NRL, AFL, A-league, Basket Ball etc) than any other state in Australia.

Talented 12- 16 year boys and girls do not disproportionally exist only in NSW and QLD. No matter what state they are from they all have the same potential to develop into super stars. You have a better chance to compete with other codes to identify, nature, develop, attract, retain and SIGN the next Cameron Smith, Kalyn Ponga, Sam Kerr, Buddy Franklin in WA.

Ahh but here’s the rub. If you have better coaching and development and play in better competitions EARLY in your developement you get better and the gap widens over time and is evident later when you are 20-25 competing with those who have had that opportunity in NSW and QLD.

You need to invest to raise the standards in schools, club rugby etc for both players and coaching. But the money resides in NSW and QLD. Then the people who are supposed to ‘identify talent” have to actually go there and put their myopic NSW/QLD basis’ aside to recognise it.

All hope is not lost, it’s just there are only two chances of this situation of ever channging. One of them is Buckley’s……..

Dear Rugby Australia Board, CEO and Chairman,

I care not for what you ‘feel”

“We feel the pain,…..”

No, It’s the rugby community that has to ENDURE THE PAIN.

I am no English scholar, however, as I understand it, Writing in the Passive voice produces a sentence in which the subject receives an action.

“…we feel like we’ve let them down.”

In contrast, writing in the active voice produces a sentence in which the subject performs an action.

“YOU HAVE LET US DOWN”

'Completely unfair': Eddie sledge that angered Waugh, new coaching contenders emerge to rebuild Wallabies

NZR+ all-access behind-the-scenes video. Camera in the face of the players in some of their darkest moments. I have watched this about three times. Really struggling to find all these ‘salty” NZers’ you speak of.

Foster was so hesitant that the first thing he said in the presser was

“Firstly I want to congratulate South Africa on what they have achieved. They have shown a lot of character and tenacity throughout the tournament. That’s three close games they have come out on the right side. They are doing something right. So hum congratulations to them on a magnificent tournament.”

'My heart breaks for him': Boks coach's message to Ian Foster is pure class as he bows out an unlucky loser

Meanwhile Back on planet reality, Sam Cane.

“I would like to say well done to South Africa, back to back, they have been a fantastic team, they have had a heck of a tough road to the final, they have showed time and time again they find a way to win, so well done South Africa”

'My heart breaks for him': Boks coach's message to Ian Foster is pure class as he bows out an unlucky loser

PSTS,
This is one of the most disingenuous posts I have read.
You clearly did not watch the after match interviews with Sam Cane or the full 13 min pressed with Foster and Cane. They repeatedly gave credit to the South Africans and how they played. Including Foster’s answer to a journo question on why ask the Boks are so hard to beat
“They just know their game,” Foster said.
“They are strong. Experienced. Clearly they have learned how to fight in dark place. You can’t argue with the three tight wins in this tournament. They’ve got the ability to play the game at their pace.”
“While I am so proud of what we did and how we worked we have to give it to South Africa, they are a quality team. They have had a few close victories in this tournament and are a different class. It’s special for them but it equally hurts for us. I can’t ask for much more than we did, we couldn’t put more out on the park.”

I have argued the case for Kerevi many times. I usually just add the links to the YouTube clips. But I appreciate your point by point rebuttal.

I don’t agree with everything you have said. However, Looking for common ground. I would agree since coming back from injury and at this RWC, his form has dropped.

I thought he was sacked, as there were power brokers behind the scenes who did not like his style. His task was to win the Asian Cup, tick, and qualify for the World Cup tick.

RTCB,

You must have missed the 2021 Rugby Championship.

“In regard to Samu, since 2019, can you please point to a three game streak where he has played consistently good rugby? I suspect you can’t.”

“Can you point to a single game against the ABs or Springbok where he made consistent hard running metres and wasn’t exposed defensively?”

2021 RC.
14 Aug NZ 57 – Aus 22 ( No Kerevi)
5 Sep NZ 38 – Aus 21 ( Kerevi played)
12th Sept. AUS 28 – SA 26 POTM Kerevi
18 Sept AUS 30 – SA 17. POTM Kerevi
25th Sept Aus 27 – Arg 8 POTM Kerevi
2nd Oct Aus 32 – Arg 17 (Kerevi/Cooper played)

>>”Can you point to the moment he has bothered so improve his long passing or kicking game?”<<

It seems they won't allow links to YouTube anymore, but the is one called "Samu Kerevi 2021 Wallabies Highlights." at 17 seconds he throw a 15 meter long pass that puts Kellaway into gap.

17 seconds in, his long pass to Kellaway looks pretty good to me.

Fair enough.

The Wrap: Why that was the All Blacks' greatest ever RWC win - but the road to fourth title is still a rough one

Hi Geoff,
First, great article and definitely a game for the ages.
However it did not have to end as it did. At 77mins the AB’s are in possession just inside the Irish half. Smith box kicks the ball to the Irish and then ensues 37 phases of gripping rugby.
Perhaps better game management may have seen AB’s retain possession and wind the clock down rather than kick it away? Or at very the least kick for a line out deep in the Irish half.
Having said all that. Many say teams don’t play to get ‘revenge’ and the last previous games mean nothing. However sport is full of those little intangibles that make the small margins the difference of win or lose.
Pre-game, Foster said this was the game they wanted. The AB’s turned up and played with the determination to right the wrongs of the past. They seemed somewhat aggrieved.
The All Blacks went to that dark place, dug deep and dragged up something special. They stood resolute, looked the Irish in the eyes as they tore out their hearts. “We invited you into our home and you had the audacity to steal our chocolates” Not tonight.

The Wrap: Why that was the All Blacks' greatest ever RWC win - but the road to fourth title is still a rough one

the bright side is that ‘rugby itself is not on the slide. If WR can get it’s Sh$t together there will be no more talk of ‘tiers’ and the freight train of young talent will come from all over the world and make for great rugby games.

Muz,

Reiko, should be pulled from playing centre and moved back to being one of worlds best wings.

Centre is not all about size and speed, smart decisions, communication and defense are just as if not more important. ALB made at least three crucial tackles when he came on , born off being a smart centre making good decisions.

37 phases and OUT! Whitelock the hero as All Blacks win epic RWC QF to break Ireland's hearts again

“Our problems go way deeper than having the national coach”
Agreed
However having a ‘bad’ coach doesn’t help in fixing them.

The three contenders to take over the Wallabies if Eddie Jones walks

M,
If you haven’t seen it, you should watch the “Chasing the Sun” documentary. What Rassie was able to do went far beyond just being a great coach. Which I think he is.
He did not shy away from confronting the deeply destabilising directive of “transformation”.
Including having to ‘evolve’ his own beliefs about where it sat on the pecking order of priority.
Acting as the catalyst/leader for a change of perspective in SA should not be underestimated.
Today they have a talismanic captain revered by the whole country at near deity status who is black, symbolising how far they have come from Chester William in 1995.
In the next three potential games, on the field, there may be a completely black backline and at least 50% of the pack. With even the most staunch “archetypal” old-school conservative Bok supporter in full-throated support.

Jones to return to Australia as Japanese reports link Wallabies coach as favourite to take over Brave Blossoms

Incoming wild speculative conspiracy theory. Is it possible the Japanese rugby union has enough money and wanted Jones so severely that they paid out his contract with RA?
