KiwiHaydn team has a great dynamic, especially when the young guns start the game and the experienced players come off the bench. This allows for cool heads during crucial moments in tight matches.
While David Havili is a versatile player, competent in multiple areas, he lacks mastery in any specific aspect. On the other hand, Thomas Umaga-Jensen showcased his skills against the Chiefs on Friday, despite being closely marked. He consistently gained yards, distributed the ball effectively, and displayed excellent rugby intelligence. Umaga-Jensen’s ability to draw in defenders and his decision-making would likely create more problems for opposing defenses compared to Havili. Standing out in a defeated team is more impressive than being part of a well-oiled machine.
Moreover, considering Mounga/DMac as the playmakers, having a larger and physical presence outside them is crucial. It is worth noting that Havili was moved to the midfield because he lacked the necessary speed to play as a fullback.

Peter, great article. Sella was all class, he held the French backline together, and he brought toughness to a sometimes otherwise flaky backline. I wonder how many games France won when Sella was injured, not many I’d imagine. Definitely one of the greats, maybe the best-ever French back.

Yes Peter, but the NH teams will only really have OZ, Arg and All Blacks to fill their coffers in Autumn, and I’d imagine OZ and ABs would like to play SA every Autumn. Basically, 6 v 4 will become 7 v 3. Additionally, the ABs may play Japan every Autumn.
SA joining the 6 Nations throws everything out of balance.
A stronger Fiji and Japan could put things back in balance.

Yes, Peter. The problem is that all the best-case scenarios i.e. nations comps are not in the best interest of the NH teams.
If SA joins the 6 Nations, this will mean the NH teams don’t get to play the Boks in Autumn, a potential loss of earnings. Also, I can’t see Italy being booted out, with their U20s starting to look strong. The rise of Italy could also assist in the possible inclusion of the likes of Spain down the track.
If everything is about money, surely SA is a bit of a dodgy bet. Additionally, has SA ever joined a comp and been happy?

If an AB signs a one/two-year contract in Japan, doesn’t this give them time to freshen up and get over injuries, free up money for other players and expand the player pool?
The real issue would be if 18 -19-year-old prospects were going overseas, then you have a major issue, ironically, ABs taking short-term contracts overseas does assist in keeping the younger players in NZ.

Intotouch, good points. The speed of their ball at the breakdown is the key to their attack. Ireland do seem to be eliminating mistakes, very few passes go to ground or are behind the man. They are very well-coached/coachable.
