You can’t support a game you can’t watch.

Europeans regularly don’t even watch it and they can get a tv deal meanwhile rugby is fighting for 3rd football in Australia and supporters literally can’t watch it. Many pubs in their Foxtel deals buy foxsports licence package for patrons to watch so when you go to watch a game at the pub they don’t have all the channels but just foxsports. They don’t have BeIN. So it can’t even been shown in a pub. Unless you have foxsports package at home you can’t watch the midnight game. How many people will watch? You’d have to think at that hour of the day with all those complications, and many fans won’t even know where to find it if they do wake up at midnight, they’d be lucky to get 1/20 of those that would if it was in foxsports. These are 2 of the top 5 teams in the world, and the third best team don’t even show it on tv. Forget grass routes. Forget nrc. Forget private vs public. Forget poaching nrl. Forget Pacific islands. Forget Asian countries. Forget Melbourne. Forget country kids. Even if these issues are important they are all a distant second! YOU CANT SUPPORT A GAME YOU CANT WATCH. THIS IS THE NUMBER 1 ISSUE.

The Wallabies could win a Grand Slam and angry fans might not see it

That is exactly right. Well said! When you say “It’s a simple proposition: rugby needs to be on FTA, otherwise it’s invisible to the Australian public”, that’s the perfect arguement.

A third tier? Sort out Super Rugby first

That’s a great point Midfielder. But, with that being said rugby has a breeding ground outside of private schools that it’s still not capitalising on – the pacific islands. While watching the Matty Johns show a few weeks ago they made the point that many of the NRL islander up and comers are rugby kids who can’t get a gig and move to NRL and are awesome. Why? It’s a joke. Rugby is losing fans, players to overseas, young players to NRL and hoping to expand their failing competition? Priorities!!!

A third tier? Sort out Super Rugby first

AFL has an entire channel on Fox. Even though it’s only on Fox AFL wins the market because kids in VIC, SA and WA schools don’t play rugby like the QLD and NSW school kids do.

A third tier? Sort out Super Rugby first

jack, NBL can’t really be compared. Is it on TV? I’m not even sure because I don’t care. It’s not played in clubs all over the country to the extent that rugby is. Our rugby competition is the best in the world and the NBL is not even close. Regarding the A League, I agree. 1 game is not enough.

A third tier? Sort out Super Rugby first

BANG! I agree. Too much talent wasted and being shipped to England, France, Japan….

A third tier? Sort out Super Rugby first

I feel your pain. Luckily I get the Reds emails and follow their social media. That’s the only way I knew.

A third tier? Sort out Super Rugby first

A third tier? Sort out Super Rugby first

I agree Mike. I’d love more rugby but I fear in working towards the third tier the ARU is missing the point. If your business is struggling you have to consolidate, not expand. They need to focus on the major issues are, not the lesser issues. Even though the third tier is great and it does align Aussie rugby with NZ and SA the ARU need to focus on the real issue.

A third tier? Sort out Super Rugby first

Amazing. Clyde, you’re exactly the type of guy we need around Wallaby camp now. An articulate, hardworking guy who has not had his success handed to him on a plate and had to work for it. When you say your career never really got off the ground, I thought you were amazing! You’ve had an amazing career! A hard running and skillful, tough player. I wish you were back in the side.

RATHBONE: My take on Jake's resignation

Yes Sheek. But what would the end result be? Would this new system change the fact that our national team can’t even really put together a good team. The issue is the depth of the player pool. Yes, making an ARC would foster young talent, but then who is financing this?

Time for the ARU to dump Super Rugby?

I agree Hog,

There is way too much rugby and it is diluting the game and the player pool.

Time for the ARU to dump Super Rugby?

I agree a contract is a cotract. Good point. Doesn’t seem like much these days.

Jake White stuns the Brumbies with early departure

Exactly. Why would he stay?

Jake White stuns the Brumbies with early departure

I agree . Boks by heaps!

Jake White stuns the Brumbies with early departure

Are you seriously considering him? That says it all. We lack so much talent that Wykes gets a mention.

Australian rugby's talent stocktake part 1: forwards

Rob9, I agree with a lot of what you’re saying but I can’t agree that we have “an exciting amount of talent and depth”. How can we beat any team with one player who is better than their opposite number? Be it Hooper or Pocock. That simply means we can’t win. I read the recent roar article where the strength of team culture was blamed and used to support our future vision of success, but a team’s culture simply can’t beat that much weight of difference in “talent and depth”. And we lack that because these player are just not working hard enough.

Australian rugby's talent stocktake part 1: forwards

Exactly.

ARU bash O'Connor with a feather

I agree. It does leave the Force to do the dirty work. I just hope that in a year or two we are talking about the way Australian Rugby has improved and JOC is back to his best. I think an overseas stint is necessary.

ARU bash O'Connor with a feather

Yes James. I agree that JOC is not the only player to blame for our current situation but recently he’s writing the headlines for himself. Kurtley too. I think James Horwill said it best last night on Fox when he said word to the effect that you’re not just a Wallaby on the pitch, but all the time. These guys are barely Wallabies on the pitch. Horwill on the other hand is from this same generation so maybe the generation is not the cause, it’s the way these players feel entitled.

O'Connor shoots himself in the foot again

How can you argue that he performs on the field? When? Performing at an international test level? Surely not.

Wallabies lack maturity: Hoiles

Brett, my point is that the supporters and media together have built an expectation around Izzy. We saw that after the ABs loss and when he was underused at wing. It’s not that all supports are making this claim, but clearly many are.

Warning! Wallabies woes to continue

Exactly Wal!

Warning! Wallabies woes to continue

Exactly Red Kev. Who of the Wallabies would make the Boks or ABs? Hooper for sure. Anyone else?

Warning! Wallabies woes to continue

I agree Madrid John. The point that Johnno missed is that being pretty and being a pretty-boy are different things. A successful handsome athlete that may do some sponsor ads doesn’t equate to an instagram pest who doesn’t do the hard-work and take selifes and photos of their meals and talk about “their brand” like they are something more than an athlete. Dan Carter does clothing ads and is known as an actual legend and does purport himself as a vain and arrogant wannabe. Same as the ABs who recently made that terrible song. If you’re going to talk yourself up – back it up! We can’t! Not anyone! Izzy can’t rate because he hasn’t done it over time. I’m not saying that Saffa and Kiwi rugby players are uglier Johnno. If our boys played a season in the Currie Cup they might see how athletes behave and act like men and show respect and the difference between being a good looking bloke and a pretty boy.
I agree Johnno and I also already said that the 3rd tier system is important. I also agree that junior comps could be better organised and more frequent.
