It didn’t take long, did it. Every tipster going against Newcastle. Yes Newy did not play well last week and both sides will be desperate for a win. Beka Mikeltadze will be in from kick off and WILL make a difference. Hopefully Archie Goodwin’s back and will come on to good affect late in the game. Putting all my Melbourne Cup winnings on a Newcastle Jets win.

The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Round 5

One of my most pleasing aspects from last season was that my two youngest adult sons starting attending Newcastle games again. Two reasons, exciting football and local prospect Archie Goodwin. His two goals against Sydney still bring a smile to my dial. Not sure FIL if you noticed the full page membership ad in the local paper this Saturday, but Archie was THE player that the club chose. He reminds me of Mark “Sparky” Hughes (Man U, Chelsea). By all accounts he’s fit and firing, so expecting big things from him and the Newy Jets.

Unifying Australian football starts at the grassroots level

I have been told about that John/Johnston podcast before. I’ll have to chase it up for sure. Got to listen to the great man speak at Boolaroo Bowling Club a few years back. He was guest speaker at a fundraiser there. Unfortunately I had to leave half way through. He did make mention of some interested parties wanting to make a movie out of his amazing story.

What is the best football book ever?

Very hard to find books here in Australia on our beloved sport. Got to agree on One Hit Wonder:The Jimmy Glass Story. I haven’t heard of The Bottom Corner before, so I’ll have to chase that one up. For those that like Non League Football I’d highly recommend The Far Corner and The Farther Corner by Harry Pearson. On the Australian side Walk Alone The Craig Johnson Story is a truly inspirational read. Be My Guest: Football Superstars in Australia by Jason Goldsmith and Lucas Gillard is also an informative and entertaining read. Mr Cleansheets by Adrian Deans is a book of fiction that’s so well written you could almost believe it could happen. A very bizarre but funny read.

What is the best football book ever?

Not sure if you have read Walk Alone the Craig Johnston story. Truly amazing story and a great read.

Win lose or draw this one Pappas will still be Newcastle’s coach. He’s doing a good job on a limited budget. No point in changing the coach again. New owners( hopefully for next season) and the skies the limit.

Disappointing Newcastle Jets desperate for three points

The fans on social media rubbishing Pappas really are ridiculous. I think considering what must be a limited budget we’re doing ok. He’ll complete the project too. Imagine what he could do with a few more dollars. Hopefully the ownership saga will be resolved before next season.
My glass is still half full on making the finals too( yes I may well be delusional?!). Sydney are very ordinary.
Newcastle must beat Wellington this week and get on a good roll from there on in.

It’s understandable that the broadcaster needs advertising revenue. As Mike mentioned in the article there’s other ways to achieve this. Tiger town certainly hits the mark too with more football related content to put advertising too. I’m surprised 10 haven’t come up with a show along the lines of Santo,Sam and Ed. Drinks breaks should only be used when needed by the player( high 30 plus days) .As for VAR scrap it. It’s a festering sore on the game.

How should the A-Leagues screen ads during free-to-air broadcasts?

The kid you’re referring too is Archie Goodwin. He’s still with the Jets on a scholarship. I think there’s an article on Keep Up today which explains his situation. Haven’t read it yet , so unsure of the detail.

Jets go from tick over to full throttle

I still think we, Newcastle, can make the six. Our attack is good and defensively we’re getting better.
I get the ‘free hit’ part, but that’s more for Papas and his coaching staff. Meaning imo that he will be here next season regardless of results.

Jets go from tick over to full throttle

Got to agree. I wouldn’t swap Beka, Yuel , Boumal or Penha for any one else in the A League at the moment. Angus Thurgate is really starting to perform well too.

Jets go from tick over to full throttle

Siatrannis is back from injury. Yes Mikeltadze does drop deep and sometimes is not in position. He did have shots that were on target but were blocked. He will get plenty of goals and could well challenge for the golden boot. A little too early to judge the Spaniard Arques. Expect to see much more of him though. We missed Thurgate big time and he won’t be available for the WSW game. Archie Goodwin did have a slight injury late in pre-season and there was talk of “protecting him”. Lucas Marquaris should be back in the game day squad this week. Yuel, Boumal and Kosta Petratos were all spotted this morning doing extras at a local suburban ground.

The Newcastle Jets were simply not ruthless enough against Macarthur

I think Papas is smarter than that. Pretty sure he signed a two year contract. He’ll see out the project. Will only leave Newcastle for a decent overseas gig.

'Papas revolution kicked into life': Jets take a big step with 4-0 win

Arthur Papas has Newcastle playing entertaining, exciting and now winning football. I know that covid is keeping some away from games but I really believe this Papasbal brand will bring back the fans in the Hunter Valley. 10k plus for the Boxing Day home clash against WSW.

A flying Newcastle Jets are the best thing about the new A-Leagues season

From all the comments it must be a fact that some are staying away due to covid concerns. Finance, or lack of it, due again to the pandemic must also be a factor. That said, as Stuart rightly points out, there were good attendances for both Matildas/USA games. I was there in the Newcastle crowd and it was a sight to see a good crowd for football again. People love a big game/event. The chance to see Sam Kerr, Ellie Carpenter etc an obvious draw card. The Jets womens team had a mini marquee set up close to the main entrance too. It’ll be interesting to see if some of those fans attend this Fridays Jets home fixture. It’s a Womens/Mens double header against the Phoenix. Newcastle has also just announced homegrown Matilda Emily Van Egmond as signed and playing at this fixture. Newcastle are slowly building as a club,1400 new members in the last four weeks, up to 6400. Nothing like the 12000 plus of a few seasons ago, but on the rise. Everyone loves a winner. If Newy start doing that watch the fans return in numbers.

Why aren’t people turning up to the A-League Men?

Looking forward to the game too. Enlighten me on the Nix curse please Kanggas2.

Newcastle Jets continue to play brave football to start 2021-22

No I’m definitely wary . It’ll be a tough gig but I think we may well win.

Not far for you to get to the ground then Gabe F. I’m at Speers Point.

Why the Newcastle Jets' derby loss is no disaster

I managed to get to Coopers to see a game there earlier in the year. It was Adelaide v MacArthur. There was one lonely soul in the away bay with his shirt on. Kudos to him if he made the effort to travel from Sydney. Adelaide does have some free public transport around the city on trams and buses. In fact we never bothered hiring a car, even using the bus to go into the Adelaide Hills.
Not sure how much collaboration there is between clubs on members ticket deals. Newcastle seem to do it with other NSW clubs and the members go free reciprocal agreement for match days between the Jets and the Coasties has been a fantastic initiative too.
I know it’s very early in the season but Victory are looking the goods.

The away day football experience: Following the Jets to Western Sydney

Yes you are right. That was the first thing my wife mentioned when we got home. I have friends that travelled from the Hunter for the Sydney Derby game ( the 60k plus game) just for the atmosphere. I hope we can get back to near something like that soon.

The away day football experience: Following the Jets to Western Sydney

It is annoying when people just see a result or maybe some brief highlights on the local news and quickly dismiss the Jets. “Oh they lost. They’re crap!” It’s one of the reasons I write these articles. A little more insight and opinion can only be good for the game. It’s going to be very interesting to see how this Newcastle team develops. Not only just as a team but as individual players. Val Yuel maybe seen as a one dimensional player at the moment, can Papas really develop him? I agree Silvera has been impressive, he needs more of the ball and more game time too. This weeks game v WSW will be interesting as their team too has a fair number of new faces.

Why the Newcastle Jets' derby loss is no disaster

The next two rounds will really test us out. WSW and Sydney away. The Wanderers have a pretty good roster on paper and Sydney have been the most consistent team over the last 4 or 5 seasons. I’m liking Arthur Papas style and this certainly squad certainly has a good vibe to it. Excited to see more.

Why the Newcastle Jets' derby loss is no disaster

Lucas Mauragis has just recently got out of quarantine after representing the Young Socceroos. Should be back in contention for the squad soon. Archie Goodwin I believe has a slight injury and is on a Jets scholarship, so we may well see him soon too.

Why the Newcastle Jets' derby loss is no disaster

I was unhappy to see Roy leave. It’s water under the bridge now and I think Newcastle have enough quality in the front third to put away plenty of goals. Roy has signed with Sydney Olympic in the Npl. Great guy as well, very funny and was mostly loved here in the Hunter.

Why the Newcastle Jets' derby loss is no disaster

Jacob Farrell has a very good debut. Your Coasties youth development is working. Bozanic is crucial to your team too. Will be hard to replace when he finally hangs up the boots.
