Yes, 15 changes does not show “healthy respect”. It shows contempt. I have seen this kind of arrogance backfire in tournaments before. A winning streak is snapped, momentum is lost and a wheel falls off.

I think the same conclusion can be reached via a much shorter analysis. The New Zealand cricket team, albeit that it is very good, cannot possibly be regarded as “the best in the business” simply because it is shown up as distinctly second-rate when it plays Australia in any of the three formats. Exhibit A – demolished and humiliated by Australia in 2015 ODI World Cup final. Exhibit B – demolished and humiliated and made to look like a bunch of club cricketers when whitewashed 3-0 in their last test series in Australia. Exhibit C – smashed by 8 wickets in 2021 T20 World Cup final even despite a brilliant individual performance by Williamson with the bat.

Muzzo, that is right but one wonders why Rennie persists with this grumpy po-faced whining all the time, as though the whole world is against him. There is little doubt that the Wallabies will win in Perth so why can he not just contain his griping and grizzling, go about his business, be magnanimous in victory and then leave it to the balanced journalists to declare a glorious new dawn for his team? That would be a positive story. At the moment Rennie is starting to look more and more like Cheika and no one really wants to hear it.
