Theres a vast difference between the amount spent on the SCG, Spotless and Homebush compared to the proposed rebuild of ANZ, the SFS, not to mention Parra, and the money already spent on rectangular stadia in the Sydney area.
Sorry, Mr FitzSimons, I'm not signing your petition
The figures arent sketchy at all. A sum total of 120 million of almost 500 million total was spent by the taxpayer (including Vic Gov money which replaced promised Federal funding for the Northern Stand). The MCC covers far more of the funding through debt than the Government has ever spent.
The MCG hasnt been rebuilt since 2002. Only the Northern Stand was rebuilt for the Commonwealth Games at a grand total cost to the taxpayer of $77 million (of more than $400 million total). The remaining money for the redevelopment was picked up by loans taken by the MCC (a private company) – not the MCG Trust (the government stadium owner). There has been another 40 odd million in taxpayer funded upgrades to the Southern Stand, but not a rebuild – the stand dates to 1992.
Will Sydney FC fans follow if the club heads north of the bridge?
they’d laugh at him, but I dont think anyone would say he has no right to comment.
Forget the AFL, what can we do to get more fans to A-League games?
having a different opinion doesnt necessarily make one ignorant.

its a relatively free country, people can have opinions. Sheehan has only been a sports writer/commentator for 40 odd years.
Forget the AFL, what can we do to get more fans to A-League games?
Actually AFLW was more a reaction to the rise and rise of the WBBL. Expansion was always happening in 2019.
Things can only get better for AFLW with expansion
VFL wanted to move to Waverly because they felt they could make more money at Waverly which they owned. The move never happened though.
Its not the involvement of interstate teams that delivers any thing special, its the fact its been the home of football and the grand final since 1897.
Another fake news flag for Victoria unfairly won at the MCG
The key word is tried. They still didnt.

I suggest you check your own history. The AFL wasnt founded in 1990, it was simply rebranded. The WA and SA clubs came to the VFL, with its attendant traditions (MCG finals, and Brownlow/Coleman/Norm SMith Medals, Mclelland Trophies etc etc)

Contracts are only not worth the paper if both club and player agree. In Gibbs case, the club held him to his contract. Theres no problem here. Theres a perception issue – if a player wants to leave you have to let him go…well no you dont.
The pre finals bye doesnt threaten the integrity of anything. What rubbish. It would threaten the integrity if it was only offered to some clubs in the finals and not others, but the fact is its offered to ALL clubs in the final series. and the top 4 still retain a double chance. it does give some players an extra week of recovery to be ready for finals footy and thats good for everyone.
What does the AFL need to fix ahead of season 2018?
You mean more than having a 600 million dollar stadium handed to them for 6 months a year at no cost to the SANFL?
Are Southern Expansion after Kogaragh Oval?
its going to happen again. And on grand final day,.
James Hird has earned the right to present the Norm Smith medal
They simply can or they woulldnt be on tv – outrating the NRL version and not languishing on NITV after being dumped by ABC2 like Marngrook. They are however being beaten in Melbourne at least by Sevens Front Bar from time to time.
Sam Newman – no laughing matter
Fairfax quoted Marsh as saying only 50% of all players have it included in current contracts.

The AFL and its players have failed to meet the challenge of change in the new CBA
Its not an Alt-fact at all. Regardless of what you specifically think, officially the AFL competition has run since 1897, celebrating its centenary in 1996 – 6 years after it rebranded. Thats a fact.
Doesnt matter how you start though, its whether you can keep going. How is that NSL these days.
Too slow: Why football will never dominate Australia
In the AFL clubs are actually given a fair share of the distributions from the league, and given additional financial support, especially when many problems are caused by league fixturing and stadium arrangements.. Hows that support worked out for the Aleague? Or the NSL, since you want to go back to that as a shining example.
AFL = VFL. It has a single continguous history from 1897 until now. A rebranding took place in 1990, it was not a new competition.. Like i said, 120 years. Thats a fact.
We arent in Europe, but thanks for the geography lesson. And finally, Fitzroy never re-located, their AFL license was merged with the Brisbane:Lions and was little more than a cosmetic arrangement. The club itself remains separate and based at Brunswick Oval, while the Bears remain part of the merged identity that is the Lions.
Too slow: Why football will never dominate Australia
“The monopilisation of Anzac day by two AFL clubs crosses the line between recognition and exploitation”. Sure, if you ignore the TWO NRL matches played on the same day.
“The other codes were asked to act in the national interest but chose not to”. Thats rubbish. The NRL was supportive, it didnt interfere with Rugby Union at all, and other than Etihad Stadium the AFL wasnt getting in the way either. Both the NRL and AFL had moved for the Olympics in 2000.
“History will show that the NSL was Australia’s first major club based sporting code with proportionate state rep numbers, something the AFL and NRL still struggle with. ” History will also show that the NSL was a revolving door of clubs right up until it was closed down, and history will also show that the AFL is still here 120 years down the track for the loss of 1 club (which still operates elsewhere).
Too slow: Why football will never dominate Australia
AFL is all about the Melbourne clubs eh.
Which is why every team introduced to the competition since 1986 has been a non victorian and we’ve gone from a 12 team victorian competition to a 10 – 8 split. Its why the AFL spent millions keeping Sydney and Brisbane going – and later Brisbane again, as well as Port, GWS and Gold Coast, and has spent 200 million on Northern game development in the last 15 years.
Its also why the AFL tv deal guarantees teams outside Victoria will receive tv coverage of every match – most of them live – while no such guarantee exists for Victorian sides. Its why the AFL allows Victorian clubs to play home games in Tasmania, NT, ACT and QLD over the years, but not allowed them to sell games to Geelong.
All aboiut them pesky Vics.
AFL's China foray can be considered a success
Im less romantic about professional sport than some. I dont believe Tasmania, the NT and the ACT have a god given right to an AFL side, although i think more could be done to foster the game itself in Tasmania at present.
But lets be clear on one thing, playing a game here and there in China or NZ is one thing, but the AFL itself does not want to be multi national, does not care about developing the game overseas and what little interest it has overseas is about sending talent back to the Australian continent.

Reality is costs were 4 million, and they made at least 7 million, possibly as much as 10 million.
Dont tell me what my standards are.
AFL's China foray can be considered a success
The entire Showgrounds upgrade was done for $65 million – $20 million of which was paid by the AFL and RAS
