ACL games are very much fly in and out ventures – its the nature of the competition itself. Theres none of the preceeding ground work and ongoing development work. Hell Port Adelaide grew the turf at the ground itself. FFA clubs arent putting in the time to develop networks and trade delegations and everything else required in the lead up to this particular match.

Ill believe other Australian sports teams can get the same kind of business influence in China for a single match when it actually happens. There is literally no evidence that this is even possible, let alone likely. Ill believe it when i see any kind of proposal. Any kind.

On the propaganda thing – if you belive the ABC, Newscorp, Fairfax and others are all in cahoots then theres no point conversing with you further.

AFL's China foray can be considered a success

Its the point a lot of people missed.

AFL's China foray can be considered a success

1. No they NZ thing was not a success.
2. No one has ever claimed SA was a success – and no premiership games have ever been played there.
3. You can believe whatever you like about the attendance figures, I wrote that they were dubious anyway.
4. The AFL still supports development programs in NZ, and the Hawthorn football club does as well.
5. As I wrote in the piece we know nothng of the ratings, and they were probably a failure.
6. The Pastoral deal is already done – its a partnership with Gina Rinhart – and was completed last year. So wait no longer!

Not only was the event sponsored by Tourism Australia, but the SA and Victorian Governments also were involved. The Australian noted that there were several influential Australian and Chinese businessmen on hand. As written, theres a lot of groundwork that has been done to get it to this point – 20 different partners for a start – its not just flying in and out for an ACL game, and therein lies a big difference.

It doesnt matter if you believe the propoganda – from multiple news sources including the ABC, News Corp, Fairfax and SBS – even the BBC reported on it – some folks will always be skeptical.

Historically, no one has put as much effort into laying the ground work as Port did before this match. AFL costs were minimal – all costs were reportedly met by Ports partners in the event. As long as that remains the case, then the games will continue. The St Kilda deal fell over because Wellington Council was the only partner and they bailed leaving the Saints with no other options.

AFL's China foray can be considered a success

Whereas I am completely unsurprised by your irrevelant response. never change jeff.

AFL's China foray can be considered a success

players from last year basically are if they arent relisted or are listed for less money.

AFLW star Tayla Harris biggest story in AFL trading period

As long as the leagues are guaranteeing player payments – and essentially they are in the AFL, and definitely are in the NRL – this trend will continue.

Clubs are playing Russian roulette with long-term contracts

Well this might be the worst one yet.

The AFL should start a regional league

I think the best measure is registered club players, and the ARU will release that data themselves. Everyone else – the ABS, the ASC (Ausplay), Morgan and others are surveys – the ARU should be giving flat data.

Roy Morgan's rugby participation numbers are fake news

You can pull participation data from any number of surveys including Morgan, the ABS and the ASC, as well as the registration data from the codes themselves and get different figures every time.

What does Australia's rich history mean for its football identity?

We’ll ignore the Challenge cup then. Ok. We have documented evidence of regular matches dating back to the 1860s at least.

What does Australia's rich history mean for its football identity?

The Gabba has as an obligation to a 30 year tenant that plays 11 home games there every year to provide a venue suitable for playing on.

That it CAN be moved to the Gold Coast is not the point. And the AFL wasnt going to be embarrassed by turnout for a Grand Final it was putting on for free anyway.

AFLW grand final venue change labelled an 'embarrassing stuff-up'

well iceland barely have 2 full teams. Denmark has had a full fledged 18 a side competition since 1989.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

well put

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

Theres no “absolutely about it”. Its the AFL offseason – the season launched before the preason – and there was a popular movement around the leagues launch.

they wont pay if they dont have to – and christ knows theres enough AFL reporters at News Limited and The Age. I dont know if you’ve paid any attention to Melbourne media over the last 150 years, but coverage of football hasnt exactly been lacking.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

Cant vouch for what various media outlets might do to protect their relationships with the AFL, but codewars sell papers. Which is why papers chase them at every opportunity – and its not a phenomena limited to victorian news.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

You honestly think it has to pay for football coverage IN MELBOURNE? (let alone Adelaide and Perth). And – as what i originally wrote – it has nothing to do with whats newsworthy, its whats popular, and sadly, theres a hell of a lot of people that have failed to read the tea leaves correctly when it comes to AFL Womens. Drastically underestimating the wave of public and grassroots support for a womens variant of the AFL.

You dont care about the Australian media, and yet here you are commenting on it. Apparently your tech aids have failed to save us from yet another bout of your boundless wisdom.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

There has always been a time when local news reported what its audience were actually interested in. Otherwise they wouldnt sell anything.

Look at how many events were held that featured players and officials leading up to the leagues launch. the league announcement at the MCG, team announcements at Docklands, league name and logo in federation sqyuare,, marquee announcements, the draft, womens exhibition matches, season launch. Not to mention a raft of press releases flying out from the club and league media units. Thats what i mean by time and effort. Its not just throwing money around willy nilly,.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

jeez its almost like this AFLW competition isnt also on pay tv and being streamed for free on the AFL website. And people might not be buying physical news papers but they sure as hell as still reading the news sites online. Subscriptions are still a thing.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

Fully agree Ben.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

I believe I addressed the AFLs cozy relationship with the print and broadcast media in the article as one of the reasons why it is getting the coverage it is. But the fact remains that for over a century, AFL football and its state variants have been what sells papers and brings in TV audiences in the South and West of the country and as I wrote, the AFL has been able to leverage those folks to cover the womens variant of the game.

You honestly believe that the AFL will let it just drop off? Thats the entire point of what im writing here. Things will fade into insignificance if you dont show that the support comes right from the top and has some clout behind it. Thats not going to happen with the AFL. – it has a huge media unit of its own, and it has a tv deal for next season already.

This has the unanimous support of the Commission, the Executive and the clubs – the ones who missed out are clamouring for expansion already. Club memberships were full subscribed at most of the new clubs – and thats with no tangible benefit due to free entry! The Media have been almost universally supportive of the new league.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

there are worse places it might be.

AFLW and the myth of undeserved coverage

You really didnt read the article at all did you?

The fact is its not enough to just be good. Getting sustained media coverage takes work from the sports involved. being good will get you a couple of days coverage after an Olympics or a World Cup, it will not build anything long term without significant effort from the Governing body and a groundswell of public support.

See Rugby Sevens. One day your winning the Olympic gold, a few months later, you cant even get a gig in the main stadium in Sydney, but get relegated to a training track across the road. There have been numerous reports on the second class treatment of W-league players.

You dont get coverage just because you think you deserve it. You get it by continuously putting yourself in the public eye and spending big on promotion and advertising. There was more than one observer on twitter the night the womens AFL started noting that this kind of buzz is what happens when you promote something properly.
