They play SA sides all the time. They beat the Bulls 47-14 on 29 March and beat La Rochelle (consecutive Euro champs) 40-13 last weekend.

I feel it’s a bit harsh on Larkham. He was assistant coach to the Brumbies and to Australia before his most recent appointment as head coach again.
He has had 12 years of “development”, some under good coaches like Jake White, van Graan, and Cheika.
2011–2013 – Brumbies (Asst. coach)
2014–2017 – Brumbies
2015–2019 – Australia (Attack coach)
2019–2022 – Munster (Senior coach)
2022– Brumbies
He also has some European coaching under his belt now. If he is still not ready then I’m not sure what else he must go and do to be ready.
There’s also more to this. Sean Everitt from the Sharks struggled despite having many marquee players. They chased him away and now he is with Edinburgh in the top 4 of the URC. You could argue he has “lesser” players to select from now than at the Sharks.
So where is the problem?
Assistants, politics, structures, other structural issues?
John Plumtree came in with a world of experience and the Sharks are rock bottom with 1 win in 11 games.
Here are just a few players on his roster:
Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi, Vincent Koch, Coenie Oosthuize, Eben Etzebeth, Jaden Hendrickse, Grant Williams, Curwin Bosch, Lukhanyo Am, Makazole Mapimpi, Aphelele Fassi…
Those are all current or former Springboks.
And they have more incoming in the form of Andre Esterhuizen, Jason Jenkins, and Trevor Nyakane (all Boks, too).
Where is the issue with the Sharks because Plumtree has done well enough with them in the past?

How can you say his reasons don’t sound right?

He probably earns a tonne of money coaching in a fairly relaxed environment and gets to do so with players and coaches from all over.

Up and leave that at 64 to go sit in front of a camera to work for a previous employer who seem to be in disarray for several years now.

He has done it before. I believe him that he does not want to do it again.

Probably the coach he knew least was Swys de Bruin and that ended not lasting. I’ve heard Swys complain about the work ethic required under Rassie and Nienaber.

He refused to work with Razor AND Foster, but this was back in 2019 before either was appointed. He was hoping JJ was going to get the gig, in which case he would have joined him at the All Blacks.

He did not lose all his assistants.

Mzwandile Stick, Deon Davids, Daan Human, and Andy Edwards are still there.

Aled Walters also moved on after 2019 and he is also involved with England. He is Welsh, so it makes sense.

The head coach (Nienaber) wanted more time with his family. Of all the teams in the last two RWCs the Boks spent the most time together (meaning time away from the family). Add covid bio-bubbles and you understand. His reasons are well documented. His family likes Ireland.

Felix Jones won two RWCs as assistant to the Boks but he is Irish. His role with England is different so he is likely looking to grow himself. Probably earns a lot more with the RFU too.

Both Flannery and Brown have worked with Rassie at Munster and the Stormers respectively. Rassie appoints people he knows.

Maybe he wants to stick to international rugby. He would have followed Jamie to the ABs had Jamie landed the gig.

The Bulls have been playing brilliant attacking rugby with White at the Helm.

There is a case to be made that some teams lif themselves after a red, or at least, in some cases.

Crusaders v Sharks 2014 comes to mind. So too England v Argentina at this same RWC.

The try pass is also grey-ish. Hands seem pointed backward but the ball was dropped due to a tackle coming from behind and the trajectory was forward off the ball-carrier because of that, in my opninion. Could have been called a knock.

Anyway, I want to thank the NZ team and a great portion, if not the majority of their supporters, for their sportsmanship and acceptance that they had their chances. Two missed kicks and botched kicks for touch.

You could have won and if you did would have been deserved winners as well.

We respect you and we know Razor is going to make you a very tough team to beat. NZ have a remarkable forward pack brewing and ours are in the twilight.

We are also losing our coach. The vaunted defense may be no more.

We don’t know who the next Bok coach will be.

I suspect Andy Farrel will get the gig and with Nienaber heading to coach Leinster, he may well be called up as an assistant by Farrel.

We’ll see if Moerat can live up to hype. Nortje is there. Ruben van Heerden, Ben Jason Dixon.

This was an exceptional generation of Bok forwards, and that says something in the context of Springbok rugby. There are some good young talent but I’m not sure they will reach the levels we’ve seen over the last couple of years.
