The summer of sports continues in England, amongst the likes of The Ashes and Wimbledon with Formula One returning to the spiritual home of motorsport at the legendary Silverstone circuit for the British Grand Prix. Be sure to tune in on The Roar from 11:50pm (AEST) and we’ll have you covered for lap by lap updates.
Grandstands have been filled to the brim and sunny skies greets the world championship at this 5.8km circuit on the site of a former wartime airfield. A great technical challenge with iconic high-speed corners such as the Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel complex.
Max Verstappen after his fifth straight win of the season in Austria last week, again is the driver to the beat. Red Bull meanwhile are hunting for their first British Grand Prix win since Mark Webber’s famous 2012 victory.
While reigning world champion Verstappen has won at Silverstone for Red Bull before, that for the keen statistician was the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020 run on consecutive weekends after the traditional event.
A fifth straight pole position will see Verstappen start at the head of the field, but rather a shock to everyone was both McLarens qualifying second and third. The upgrades at last making it to Oscar Piastri’s side of the garage and the rookie lines up on the second row.
Though Ferrari behind is expected to have better race cars, as Charles Leclerc leads Carlos Sainz from fourth. Mercedes in contention too from sixth and seventh, while Sergio Perez again must work his way through the field after another Q1 elimination.
Sainz was the winner in 2022, claiming his maiden grand prix win for Ferrari from pole position. In what ended up being a controversial outcome for the Scuderia, due to Leclerc being unhappy with their strategy calls.
The fight again will lie with the rest of the top ten, with so much close competition and opportunity for close racing at this circuit. This can be a race of attrition, as witnessed last year on Lap 1 with that horrific crash involving multiple cars that saw Guanyu Zhou’s Alfa Romeo hurled through the fence metres from a grandstand.
Tyre strategy will come into it as well, with two-stops the likely avenue for most given the stress the tyres endure through the high-speed corners.
Will it be a sixth win on the bounce for the flying Dutchman? Or can we be treated to a Silverstone surprise from the hungry pack of drivers behind Verstappen, wanting to hoist that prestigious BRDC trophy?
