Coming into the French Open for 2012, and a different Spaniard is in top form for a go at the title. 26-year-old Spaniard Nicolas Almagro has all the credentials to be the perfect surprise packet at Roland Garros.

Almagro, who is known as a clay court specialist enjoyed his best year thus far in 2011.

He won three titles, made a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open, won an excellent 13 out of his first 14 matches on clay, as well as achieving a career high ranking of world number 9.

The Murcia resident has proved to be a fantastic player on clay throughout his career winning all 11 of his career titles on the playing surface. In a staggering statistic, Almagro has won more titles on clay than arguably the greatest player of all time Roger Federer.

This remarkable statistic demands attention for Almagro at Roland Garros, however it seems unlikely that he will get it.

With Almagro not receiving attention at the tournament it seems more likely than ever that he will fly under the radar. If you are still not convinced, then consider that he has previously enjoyed two French Open quarter final appearances.

Everything points to Almagro basking in success in Paris and if the stats don’t lie, then Nicolas could make a run to the final or even beyond.
