Queensland denied a penalty try after controversial review

With New South Wales under siege from a second-half onslaught by Queensland, the home crowd were up in arms after what appeared to be a professional foul by Latrell Mitchell.

Daly Cherry-Evans sent a smart kick through the middle of the Blues defence and it looked as if Matt Gillett was set to pounce and score, only to get collected by two NSW defenders before he could get there.

Maroons fans and players were screaming for a penalty try and the bunker was consulted for the sixth time but, while the video referee cited Mitchell for a professional foul, a penalty try was not awarded.

The decision made it a whopping four potential tries disallowed by the video referee for Queensland on the evening. Corey Oates had a dive over the sideline rubbed out in the opening minutes, while Dylan Napa was ruled to have knocked on before half time.

Michael Morgan bowled over the line in the second half, but he too wasn’t awarded the four points after the video ref found he was held up and never got the ball grounded.
