The Chiefs finally kicked their season into life last week, but will face another tough challenge this week when they fly to Argentina to play for the strong forward pack of the Jaguares in Buenos Aires. Join The Roar for live scores from 8:40am (AEDT).
The Argentinian franchise have been known throughout their time in the Super Rugby competition – particularly in the last 12 months – for having a strong forward pack who are up for whatever challenge is thrown at them, even if that doesn’t always come off with victories.
That stat has improved in the last 12 months of course, and the Jaguares have been solid so far in 2019, but far from spectacular.
They sit last in a strong South African conference with just two wins from their six games, and will be looking for something for a form reversal this week.
It’s hardly a surprise to seed both of their wins (over the Lions and Blues), have come on home soil, and they will need to defend Buenos Aires like their lives depend on it if they are to qualify for the finals at the end of the season.
On the other hand, the Chiefs were expected by most to be something of a middle of the road team this year, but so far, have looked like a bottom of the rung team, and their results are reflecting the on-field look and feel of the franchise.
After losing their first four on the trot, including one to the Sunwolves and a blowout against the Crusaders, where 57 points were run in, they managed a draw with the Hurricanes, then surprised many by going on the road and getting the better of the Bulls.
Scoring 56 points was the first time the Chiefs attack has really clicked into gear all season, and it’s something they need to continue doing if they are to make a real fist of the season and push for the finals after their woeful start.
Prediction
It’s hard to say whether the Chiefs’ win last week was just a flash in the pan, or something more as they look to get their season going, but at any rate, a trip to Argentina should be a bridge too far for the visitors.
