Australia and France get the Hopman Cup underway on Saturday evening with Ashleigh Barty set to take on Alize Cornet in what has the potential to be an excellent match-up. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8:30pm (AEDT).

Barty had an outstanding 2018, but so did Cornet, with both players putting in strong seasons.

The Australian, still 22 years of age, had a stunning year, finishing it ranked 15th. While her grand slam performances in singles left a little bit to be desired for the most part, some of her performances away from the big tournaments were excellent.

For a player who has only been back in the game for 24 months since her stint across playing cricket, Barty has risen through the ranks quickly, fulfilling the potential many forecasted she would have when she first burst onto the scene.

After a fourth-round appearance at the US Open, she finished her season strongly with a semi-final at Wuhan and a tournament victory in the ATP elite trophy finals.

She will look to continue that form and momentum into the new year and build her game from the back of the court, dominating in movement and ground strokes.

Cornet finished the year 45th. She wasn’t quite as successful as Barty, but had a strong year regardless with plenty, although first-round exits at both Wimbledon and the US Open certainly hurt where she ended up.

The 28-year-old didn’t finish the year all that strongly with second and first-round exits in her last two tournaments, but she has been to at least the third round of all four grand slams, so has a wealth of experience to draw on here.

The duo have had two previous matches. The first of those was won by the more experienced Cornet when Barty was just 18 years of age and before her brief stint playing cricket.

The second was at the back end of last year at the Rogers Cup when Barty beat Cornet in straight sets.

Prediction
Barty proved to be pretty consistent throughout the course of last year and I’d expect her to get the job done here against Cornet to start her season on the right foot.

Barty in three sets.
