Karolina Pliskova and Naomi Osaka will clash in the second women’s semi-final at the Australian Open, in what could be one of the matches of the tournament. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from around 4pm (AEDT).

Pliskova was so nearly on a plane out of the country today after her tournament was on match point against Serena Williams four times yesterday.

In what was one of the most startling comebacks in recent tennis history, Pliskova found herself down 5-1 in the third set. It came after dominating the first set, but dropping the second against the greatest player of this generation.

Williams has never lost from such a position on the WTA tour, and going up 5-1 with a match point, it looked over. However, she appeared to tweak her ankle (and while it wasn’t used as an excuse), Pliskova would break serve three times and win six games on the trot to take the match without the need for a breaker in the third.

Osaka though, has also been in fine form, matching Pliskova with fine performances throughout the tournament.

She has had a day off between matches as well, which could help, especially after dismantling Elina Svitolina in straight sets during her quarter-final.

The sixth seed was no match for Osaka, who powered her way to victory with precision, accuracy and big hitting, as well as excellent court movement.

That being said, there could be a lot of short service games in this match, and it’s going to be about pouncing on opportunities in returning serves to win the match.

Pliskova holds the edge from their previous three matches, having won two, but given one of those was a retirement and their two matches last year were somewhat one-sided, it’s hard to know how they come into this one at all.

Prediction
This is one hell of a tough match to tip. Both players are powerful and it could come down to a couple of points here and there, but rolling on the back of an incredible comeback victory yesterday, Pliskova should have enough to get the job done here
