Australia’s Matthew Ebden will look to continue his impressive start to the new season as he takes on David Ferrer in the second match of the tie between Australia and Spain at the Hopman Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from around 10pm (AEDT).

Despite the connotation in the media that Ferrer is a journeyman, a deeper dive into the stats would say anything but. While he never reached the dizzying heights of Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, he is seventh on the overall list of prizemoney winners in the history of men’s tennis.

That’s a staggering statistic, and he has had some amazing highs throughout his career.

The Spanish veteran is in his final season before retirement though, and he is likely to not compete in any of the grand slams before finishing on home soil in Madrid and Barcelona at the end of the clay court swing through Europe.

Still, he will be keen for his final tournament in Australia to be a good one, but it was little surprise he suffered a loss to Alexander Zverev in Spain’s opening tie against Germany.

Matt Ebden, on the other hand, spent 2018 in career-best form as he cracked the top 50 in the rankings for th time, finally able to put a significant run together without being injured.

Ebden continued that form in Australia’s first tie on Saturday as he caused a shock upset over Lucas Pouille.

His fight to get out of sticky situations and stay with games when they seem lost is admirable, and it was on display again as he dragged a break of serve back against the Frenchman.

Prediction
This match is a tough one to tip. Ferrer is incredibly experienced, but the drive of Ebden and preparation for a tough Australian summer should see him get the job done here.

Ebden in straight sets.
