After a week of tennis and three ties for each of the eight nations involved in this year’s tournament, there is no disputing that for the second year in a row, the undefeated Germany and Switzerland are the teams who deserve to be in the final.

Germany have had an outstanding tournament, with Zverev and his partner dropping just one match across the tournament, a doubles in their second tie.

Zverev, taking on Matthew Ebden, David Ferrer and Lucas Pouille in Group A, has improved with each outing on the court.

While his first two matches saw consistency wane at times against Ferrer and Pouille as he drifted in and out of the matches and took three sets to get each of them done, he put on a performance which he can build the entire Australian summer on last night.

From the word go, he was painting the lines against Ebden, his big serve and forehand catching everything, while he was also moving around the court excellently.

He is going to need to be at his best against Federer though, who, while not playing any majorly big names in Group B, hasn’t put a foot wrong and looks like he is now building nicely for a tilt at a third straight Australian Open in a couple of weeks.

Federer is yet to drop a set at the Hopman Cup, his serve up around the 80 per cent mark for the duration of the tournament.

While he can’t match Zverev in the power department, he has dealt with players like this right throughout his career, and once he gets the serve going and begins to dominate the net, he is incredibly tough to beat.

If the German is to win, he will need a fast start, but that’s often such a struggle against the 20-time grand slam champion.

Prediction
Federer is the greatest player of all time and while there is always the threat he is going to go off the boil with age against someone with the power and all court game of Zverev, he should get the job done here to crucially give the Swiss a winning start to the final of what could be the final Hopman Cup tournament.
