WATCH: Tennis was very different the last time an Aussie woman won Wimbledon

Ash Barty is on the verge of doing something very special and rare in Australian tennis.

Even if she doesn’t win against Karolina Pliskova just making the final weekend of Wimbledon is something to be proud of.

It’s been 41-years since Evonne Goolagong Cawley won the tournament in 1980. The last Australian woman to do so.

When you take a look back at the vision above it strikes you just how much the game has changed.

While Barty can serve and volley with the best players today, it’s impossible to do it as consistently as it was done in 1980.

The power of today’s game with carbon graphite frames compared to the wooden racquets of the 1980s means that more baseline rallies are inevitable.

The tactics of 1980 are fascinating with both Goolagong Cawley and Chris Evert working on finesse and angles to get an edge.

For some reason, they decided tennis balls would be better white than yellow and we love the fact that the first thing Goolagong Cawley does after winning the title is taking a sip of Coke. Take that Ronaldo!

There were also no post-match on court speeches or interviews after the trophy presentation.

The match was notable for the fact it was the first time a tiebreak had been used to decide a set in a final at Wimbledon. Goolagong Cawley winning the match 6-1, 7-6.

For the record, Goolagong Cawley received 18,000 pounds for her victory or a tick over $30,000 Australian.

Whoever wins on Saturday night will receive a cool 1.7 million pounds ($3.19 million AUD).
