Craig Williams took the ride on Mount Athos after the stable opted for a local rider having been disappointed with the efforts of English jockey Ryan Moore in the last year’s race.

On that occasion Mount Athos settled at the back of the Melbourne Cup field before making a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful run down the straight.

Mount Athos was positioned just behind the leaders, and considering a good pace set, was very strong in the final straight as he stayed on for third.

Trained by Cumani at England’s Newmarket stables Mount Athos came to Melbourne, fresh with a lead-up run, after a season of mixed performances.

We’ll await to see if Cumani will race him again in 2014 – the Cumani stable has a burning desire to win the race.

Mount Athos paid a price of $4.30 for the place on the Victorian Tote.
