X-rays have detected a reason for Fontiton’s unplaced run as favourite in Saturday’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Trainer Robert Smerdon has revealed Fontiton suffered a bone chip injury to her off-front fetlock that will require surgery.

The winner of her first three starts, she’ll have two bone chips removed and cleaned up.

Fontiton was sent to the paddock following the race as planned, with Smerdon stating that the injury won’t affect Spring Carnival plans.

“She had swelling around and above the fetlock on Sunday morning,” said Smerdon to Racing Victoria.

“X-rays taken today (Monday) have shown that there are two bone chips off the fetlock and she will go in for surgery, which will likely be up in Bendigo.

“The prognosis is very good for an injury like this, it is much better than having bone chips in the knee.

“The convalescence period matches up perfectly with the planned spell that she was having so it will not have any impact on our plans for the Spring Carnival.”
