Drivers, horses and the clerk of the course escaped serious injury after a potentially disastrous racing incident in Wagga this afternoon.

Chris Wilson, the clerk of the course, was knocked off his horse following a failure with the mobile arm to close, during race three. His horse then bolted, coming into contact with the oncoming field.

Wilson injured his right hand but according to Harness Racing NSW continued to work at the meeting, while the field somehow escaping a more serious injury.

‘Great Hand’ ended up winning the race, which was re-run after two scratchings. The horse was involved in the initial crash before it was re-run, a big reversal of fortunes.

There were no reports of serious injuries to any of the horses but driver Leon Hancock did suffer an injury to his leg. The mobile arm had to be replaced before racing continued.
