With less than three weeks until the excitement of the Olympics get under way, let’s take a look at the numbers that matter.

27– The Rio Olympics will be the 27th Olympics of the modern era. The first was in 1896 in Athens and we have missed just three since due to wars.

28– Number of Olympic sports to be played with 42 disciplines and 306 events.

1– The first modern Olympics to be held in South America. The closest it came was in 1968 when Mexico hosted them.

17– The number of days that the Olympics will be held over with the opening ceremony on the fifth August and the closing Ceremony taking place on the 21st August.

206– The number of nations competing at the Olympics as well as one refugee team from combined nations. This is the most ever.

25,000– Number of journalists worldwide that will be covering the games.

7.5 million– the number of tickets have gone/are on sale to watch the Olympics.

10,500– The number of athletes competing. Another record breaker.

306– The number of medals that will be awarded with 161 for men, 136 for women and nine mixed.

112– years since golf last appeared at the Olympics.

0– Olympics that rugby-sevens has been competed at. This is their debut. It is also Kosovo’s Olympic debut as a nation.

500,000– Number of tourists that will flock to Rio de Janeiro to watch the games and witness the electrifying atmosphere.

60,000– Number of meals that will be prepared each day for the athletes.

4– Districts in Rio that will host events (Copacabana, Barra de Tijuca, Deodoro, Maracana).

$37.6 billion– Amount of money that is spent to host the 2016 Olympic games by the Brazilian authorities.

50,000– Volunteers to help the Olympics run as smooth and well as ever.

410– Australian athletes to cheer on in Rio.

25– The number of times before Rio Australia has competed at the Olympics (this is excluding when Australia competed with New Zealand)

11– Australia’s rank in the all-time Olympic medal tally.

139– Number of gold medals Australia has won at the Olympics. we have also won 152 silver medals and 177 bronze accumulating in total 468 medals

31– Events that Australia is participating in.
