In 2016 the race has drawn an incredibly strong international field, with horses trained out of Europe, America, Japan and New Zealand all making the journey down under for the chance to etch their name in racing history.

In its 156-year history, the Cup’s prize money has increased dramatically from a few hundred pounds and a gold watch for first place in 1861 (no prizes for second or third back then!) to a prize pool of $6.2 million split ten ways.
