For the third time, a David Hayes-trained horse has taken out the Caulfield Cup, after Boom Time stormed home to stun everyone along the final stretch.
The six-year-old had not been considered a strong chance prior to the race, starting at $51, with Johannes Vermeer instead widely regarded to have been the favourite.
Yet in the key moments, Boom Time proved the doubters wrong with an exhilarating run.
Speaking to the surprising nature of the result, veteran Channel 7 commentator Bruce McAvaney voiced his own shock in the moments following the race.
“I didn’t think he was good enough, none of us did!” McAvaney revealed.
“This is a stunning result.”
