Scrums banned from free-kicks, 20-min red cards and shotclocks: World Rugby tries to speed up the game
Seven months after the Springboks sensationally elected for a scrum from a mark inside their 22-metre line during their run to a fourth Webb…
When you’re a South African supporter, you have to be able to live with the ups and downs. In twelve months, the Springbok supporters have experienced winning the World Cup, winning in New Zealand for the first time in ten years and beating Australia and England by record scores.
Then there’s also been another Super 14 failure and coming dead last in the Tri Nations on the other side.
So you learn to roll with the punches and enjoy the ups when they come around without dwelling too much on the downs.
At the moment though, we’re experiencing quite an up.
On the rugby side, our last four Tests include a record win over Australia and an undefeated Northern Hemisphere tour, including a record win against England at Twikenham.
Prospects for the 2009 are also looking quite good (although we all know how quickly that can change!) The Sharks look like real contenders for the Super 14, and the Bulls (with Victor Matfield back) and Stormers are expected to push for the semi’s.
The Springboks are also expected to be too strong for the incoming Lions, although I don’t expect victory to come as easily for South Africa as it did for New Zealand in 2005. It should be a cracking series.
The team is shaping up nicely and should also push New Zealand and Australia hard for the Tri Nations title this year.
And on other sporting fronts, there’s been South Africa’s first Test cricket series win in Australia.
That says it all.
