Culina's rant unjustified and misses point

The much-improved Newcastle Jets suffered a narrow 2-1 loss in Sydney in Round 7. But the game was overshadowed by the rant of Branko Culina, and his later recanting.

Culina first appeared to have a go at Lavicka, but in his later recanting said he was implying that homegrown coaches were unfairly maligned in favour of overseas coaches, even going far as to say Graham Arnold is harshly treated.

Excuse me.

Arnold has earned and deserves his poor reputation as a coach.

That’s not the end of it.

Branko misses the point entirely about importing quality overseas coaches.

It is intended above all else to improve the standard of coaching in this country, so that homegrown coaches can hold their own against the best of them.

This is how Japan done it – the influence of Zico and Wenger is pervasive in Japanese football.

This is how many Asian and African countries did it: import the best of European and South American expertise years ago paid off handsomely for countries with less by way of footballing resources.

Is this oblivious to everybody?

Or is our local game still stuck in a head in sand mentality where coaching is concerned?
