Brosque called into Socceroos squad

Sydney FC striker Alex Brosque has been called into the Socceroos squad for Saturday’s Asian Cup qualifier with Oman in Muscat.

Brosque has been in fine form in the A-League this season, and wins his first international call-up in four seasons after Japan based striker Josh Kennedy was forced to withdraw due a back injury.

The move is another snub for Celtic striker Scott McDonald, whose two goals at the weekend were not enough to earn him a recall after he was left out of Pim Verbeek’s original squad named last week.

Brosque won the last of his four caps in 2006.

Aston Villa defender Shane Lowry, who is on loan to Plymouth Argyle, was also added to the squad.

Lowry only recently committed his senior future to Australia after playing as an under 21 for Ireland.

“It was totally unexpected but I can’t wait to get over to Oman and join the rest of the team,” Brosque said.

“It (making the Socceroos) is something I haven’t been thinking about but I guess it was always in the back of my mind.

“I’ve just been trying to concentrate on playing well and consistently with Sydney FC.

“I’m looking forward to training with the team for a week in Oman and I’ll be looking to learn from the experience and if I get a chance to get on the pitch I’ll be giving it my best shot.”
