The Netherlands ended a 32-year wait to reach the World Cup final on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over Uruguay in a tense semi-final match at Green Point Stadium.

Holland, who previously reached the final in 1974 and 1978, took an 18th-minute lead against the two-time champions when veteran captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst fired a left-footed thunderbolt into the top-right corner from 35 yards.

Uruguay drew level before half-time with a curling strike from their talisman and stand-in skipper Diego Forlan, but Bert van Marwijk’s side secured victory through second-half goals from Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben.

Right-back Maxi Pereira pulled a goal back for Uruguay in the second minute of stoppage time to set up a nervous final few moments.

The Netherlands will play either Germany or Spain, who meet on Wednesday, in Sunday’s final in Johannesburg.
