The attitude problems at St Kilda came to the fore at the club’s annual general meeting last week, with the most influential person at the Saints accusing everyone else of hurting the club’s image.

St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt accused others of breaking down the club and its reputation. He also set in place an “us versus them” mentality which the club will take into this season.

Others breaking down the club Mr. Riewoldt? I can see where you are coming from.

I can see that others outside the club distributed the images of you in nude to destabilise St Kilda, I can see that other clubs got four players drunk and then planted sleeping pills on them, and I can see that everyone is out to get to St Kilda (sarcasm warning).

This little speech caps a strange period of time in which St Kilda’s strong “bubble” is seemingly about to burst.

The strangeness started when Ross Lyon threatened to activate the AFL’s anti-vilification policy on any player who sledged St Kilda about the nude photo scandal. This idea was quickly shot down by Brent Harvey, who reminded the world that St Kilda are the best sledgers in the game and would not be spared as long as the sledges didn’t cross a moral line.

Then came the trip to Queenstown, New Zealand, where four players were suspended and a startling admission made by the coach that their development program for young players wasn’t working and needed to be reviewed.

The strangeness was compounded by the AFLPA (AFL Players Association) criticising St Kilda for not implementing their development program which has been proven to work at other clubs.

Something smells rotten at the St Kilda Football Club.

Something stinks in the ranks and it is undermining the competency and mindset of the St Kilda players who are trying to lift that 41-year-old monkey off their back.

Something radical needs to happen down at Seaford and it’s in the player’s interest to change it themselves because instability and scandal ruins any chance of success.
