The Newcastle Jets have suffered a major blow before a ball has been kicked for the new A-League season, with marquee signing Jason Culina requiring season ending knee surgery

Culina has returned to the field for pre-season work and was on track to trial for the club before feeling a pinching in his knee, related to an alignment issue. with the alignment in his knee requiring further operation

Jets CEO Robbie Middleby confirmed said he was disappointed for the Socceroo midfielder and for the team and supporters:

“We will not be adding to our squad in the short term but be relying on our strategy of developing and promoting home grown products to give them a chance to shine in the Hyundai A-League,” Middleby said.

“This policy has already been showing dividends with development of exciting new players like James Virgilli, Jacob Pepper and Taylor Regan who are undefeated after 10 trial games.”

“In consultation with the Club, I have made this decision to have the operation as soon as possible to ensure I will be fit and ready for the 2012/13 season,” Culina said.

“Whilst I feel frustrated to sit out the season I have nothing but confidence in how the team are playing and the young talent coming through will ensure the Jets have a great season.

“I am really loving my time in Newcastle and thank all those that have sent me best wishes to get back on the paddock and to my teammates who will do Newcastle proud this year.”
