Decison opens door at Bathurst: Whincup

V8 Supercars officials have opened the door to more aggressive driving in Sunday’s Bathurst 1000, Holden star Jamie Whincup says.

Whincup was left fuming at the end of last month’s Sandown 500 when Ford’s Mark Winterbottom pushed past his Holden in the closing stages of the endurance race.

Despite his anger, stewards upheld Winterbottom’s pass and three-time Bathurst champion Whincup says he’ll remember that call if he has to make a risky pass during this weekend’s race.

“I personally didn’t mind the move that Mark put on me at Sandown, but with the current rules, it’s not within them,” Whincup told AAP on Wednesday.

“They’ve set a precedent there, that that type of move is on. You don’t have to give racing room on the exit of a corner.

“If a move happens on the inside of Forrest’s Elbow and another car ends up in the wall, well then that should be no problems if they’re being consistent with what they showed at Sandown.”

Whincup still leads the title race despite his Sandown disappointment and says he’s feeling good ahead of Bathurst.

The 29-year-old has taken a backseat to race favourite and teammate Craig Lowndes in the build-up to this week’s race, but Whincup said the low-key approach suited him just fine.

“As far as I’m concerned, PD (Paul Dumbrell, co-driver) and I, we’ve prepared well, have as good a chance as any,” he said.

“We’ll go out there and try and do as good a job as we can.”
