WACA on the ASX?

The Board of the WACA (Western Australian Cricket Association) are to be congratulated.

They have made plenty of correct moves in the past 12 months.

The addition of mining great George Jones to the Board as chairman hopefully will see Western Australian cricket take an extra interest in long term financial growth.

With Justin Langer, Mike Hussey, Wayne Clarke, Dennis Lillee and co attending to matters on the field, and Christina Matthews and management handling off-field matters professionally, the Board is free to look at revenue streams such as increasing attendances, increased sponsorship, broadcasting rights, concession sales, beverage and food sales, venue hire and so on.

If Jones and the team can put together an up-market presentation for all forms of cricket from Big Bash to Sheffield Shield to Ryobi Cup, I wonder if the WACA brand might be iconic enough to list on the ASX in one form or another.

It would be a template for other state and world cricket organisations (e.g. the Australian cricket team) to copy, and I see Jones being just the man to pioneer it.

No one expects huge returns from such an investment initially but the face of cricket is changing so rapidly that getting in on the ground floor with the Australian Stock Exchange would be something to aspire to for cricket and investors.
