Queensland Cup grand final a breath of fresh air

Anyone who missed the Queensland Cup grand final between the Mackay Cutters and Easts Tigers is not a true lover of rugby league.

The game ebbed and flowed for the entire 80 minutes and either team would have been a deserved winner.

But as is always the case, there can only be one winner and the Mackay Cutters got the bikkies.

As it turned out, they scored a try as the siren was about to go, bringing the final score to 27-20.

Considering the closeness of the contest, a one point win would have been more fitting of the contest.

While watching the contest I wondered why I was enjoying it so much, and then the penny dropped.

There was only one referee on the field!

There was no incessant chatter about technical breaches from commentators and you saw blokes getting straight up after an accidental whack in the head.

Overall, there was just good footy played like we used to see years ago.

If ever there’s been a case to support this level of competition taking over as the second tier moving up in the pecking order above the Holden Cup, this was it.

I don’t get to see the NSW version other than the odd replay but surely the NRL can see having these games before the main NRL fixture is the way to go.

Nostalgia is alive and well and living in the second tier competitions.

Have these grand finalists play off before the NRL Grand Final and make the prizemoney worthwhile.
