What we learnt in NFL Week 10

Despite the current Jonathan Martin/Richie Incognito story dominating headlines, the actual games being played are the most interesting happenings in the NFL.

Here’s what we learnt from the past week:

Carolina Panthers – so hot right now
With a one-point victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the Panthers extended their winning streak to five games, and are now 6-3.

Despite having the easiest schedule in the NFL over the first eight games (opponents totalling .343 win percentage) the big win on the road against the 49ers was a statement victory.

If the Panthers can handle the Patriots next weekend, they’ll be in a good spot to challenge the Saints for the NFC South title.

Tavon Austin can play in the NFL after all
The eighth overall pick in the draft, Austin had been a disappointment for the Rams, not able to get on the field and having little impact for the team.

That all changed Sunday against the Colts, as Austin returned a punt 98 yards for a touchdown, and added two long touchdown receptions.

Austin is the first player in NFL history to have a punt return over 95 yards and two touchdown receptions over 55 yards in the same game.

Russell Wilson is among an elite class
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has proven to be the best value of the 2012 draft, and on Sunday he became the fifth quarterback in the Super Bowl era to win 20 starts in his first two NFL seasons (with Marino, Roethlisberger, Flacco and Ryan).

The Seahawks are 9-1 for the first time in franchise history and are leading the NFC West.

A whole new cast for playoffs
For the first time in 10 years, the NFL playoffs might feature a brand new division champion for all eight divisions.

Through week 10, only one division (AFC East) is currently being led by the team which won the title in 2012 (New England Patriots).

The seven other divisions are currently being led by a brand new team, and three of those teams finished last in 2012 (New Orleans, Detroit and Kansas City).

2008 Lions are still all alone
Two teams, the Buccaneers and Jaguars, entered Week 10 winless on the season, and both corrected that fact with wins this weekend.

The Jaguars knocked off division rivals Titans 29-27 thanks to a Jake Locker injury, and the Buccaneers bested the Dolphins 22-19 on Monday night, icing the game with a Revis interception.

Neither team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but realistically these teams are battling for the number one draft spot in 2014.

Quick Hits
Giants running back Andre Brown has played in one game and is only 40 yards off becoming the rusher leader for New York.

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles posted the highest-ever opponent quarterback rating in Lambeau Field this week.

The Giants three-win streak is the current fourth longest in the NFL after starting 0-6.

So far, 2013 has the third highest touchdown-passes-per-game average since 1963.

Five NFL players have nine or more receiving touchdowns – three are Broncos.

Danny Woodhead is on pace for the second-best receiving season for a running back in NFL history.
