The 2013 NFL regular season has now ended and playoffs are finally here. On the first of February the NFL will congregate on New York City for the league’s third annual awards ceremony to present the various NFL accolades.

This year is hosted by 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin. Like most NFL fans I can’t wait and so let’s speculate on who will win the coveted awards.

Most Valuable Player: Peyton Manning, quarterback, Denver Broncos
This is the safest prediction of all of the awards. Manning has had one of the greatest seasons ever by a quarterback. He set the NFL record for most yards in season with 5477 and he also broke the NFL record by throwing 55 touchdowns.

He also finished with a 115.1 passer rating leading his team to a 13-3 record and the number one seed in the AFC. He is definitely worthy of the award and this will be his fifth NFL MVP award (yet another record).

The real debate is whether he will receive all the votes or not? It will be absurd if someone does not vote for Manning.

Offensive Player of the Year: Peyton Manning, quarterback, Denver Broncos
See Above. Anyone who wins the MVP should win the offensive and defensive player of the year award. Great alternative options would be LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles. Both had brilliant seasons.

Defensive Player of the Year: Robert Mathis, OLB, Indianapolis Colts
This award is probably the hardest of them all too select.

There are so many deserving winners including: JJ Watt, Robert Quinn, Earl Thomas, Luke Kuechly, Richard Sherman and Vontaze Burfict.

Ultimately I went with Robert Mathis who lead the league in sacks with 19.5 and forced fumbles with eight. Mathis had his best year ever even with no recognisable pass rush opposite him like Dwight Freeney.

At 32 years old Mathis showed why he is a future Hall-of-Famer.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Eddie Lacy, RB, Green Bay Packers
This was definitely a three horse race between Lacy, Keenan Allen and Giovani Bernard. All three made immediate impacts on their teams and helped them all clinch playoff spots. For Lacy though he carried his team offensively in the injury absence of Aaron Rodgers.

Lacy finished with 1,178 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. Even more impressive was only one fumble in 284 carries. Lacy’s 531 yards after contact ranks fourth in the NFL, remarkable for a rookie.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Kiko Alonso, LB, Buffalo Bills
Alonso was dubbed mini Kuechly after storming into scene with an impressive month to start the NFL season. Alonso was everywhere making sacks, making a lot of tackles and catching interceptions. His play didn’t stay at that elite level all season but he still finished third in the NFL in tackles with 159.

He also managed two sacks, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries on the year. Other players like Sheldon Richardson, Tyrann Mathieu and Star Lotulelei would also be considered in this award.

Coach of the Year: Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers
The Panthers started the season 1-3 and Rivera’s job was in hot water but the coach turned his team around winning 11 of the next 12 to claim the two seed in the NFC.

The Panthers also finished the 2012 season 7-9 and despite being in the tough decision will host a home playoff game and have genuine shot of making and winning the Super Bowl.

Bill Belicheck may grab some votes for claiming a two seed with the weakest roster he has had in years.

Comeback Player of the Year: Darrelle Revis, CB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Revis will win the award. Should he? I don’t think so. Revis was used incorrectly for most of the season and was often not as effective as he should be. There are many other players that were deserving of the award including another cornerback in Brent Grimes and Packers defensive tackle Johnny Jolly.

This award is almost always given to the bigger names hence why Thomas Davis (who came back from three ACL injuries last season) was snubbed in 2012.

NFL.com Fantasy Player of the Year: Peyton Manning, quarterback, Denver Broncos
See MVP section. Threw a lot of touchdown passes, a tonne of yards and only ten interceptions. Fantasy Stud.

Play of the Year: Tom Brady and Kenbrell Thompkins, New England Patriots
Down 27 – 23 at home Tom Brady found Kenbrell Thompkins in the back corner of the endzone on a 17 yard touchdown with five seconds remaining to beat the then undefeated New Orleans Saints 30 -27.

The look on Rob Ryan’s face says it all. He should have never have played prevent defence.

A valuable lesson for him.

GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Year: Tony Romo, quarterback, Dallas Cowboys
This could very easily be the play above us, but Tony Romo thoroughly deserves it for his efforts to keep the Cowboys season alive in Week 16 against the Washington Redskins.

Clearly injured (he was put on IR days later), Romo lead his team to a winning touchdown by finding DeMarco Murray for a ten yard touchdown pass on fourth and ten with one minute and eight seconds remaining.

That sums up the awards for the 2013 NFL season, agree or disagree? Voice your opinions in the comments below! Who is your MVP?
