V8 teammate backs Frosty to respond

It’s taken just six races and two events for Mark Winterbottom’s hard earned V8 Supercars championship lead to disappear.

The Ford ace left the Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin in June full of confidence and holding a 161-point lead in the standings.

On Sunday, that margin became a 15-point deficit as Jamie Whincup stormed to the top of the standings at Queensland Raceway.

Winterbottom, who had battled to a pair of sixth-placed finishes in Saturday’s two races in Ipswich, had a shocker in Sunday’s 200km event.

A tyre puncture 43 laps into the 65-lap race was all it took for the lead Winterbottom had held since late April to vanish, as he limped home to a 22nd-place finish.

Winterbottom has now gone six races without a top five finish following his victory at Darwin but his teammate Chaz Mostert has faith the Bathurst 1000 champion is capable of bouncing back.

“He’s a pretty cool cat,” Mostert said.

“The enduros are still to come. They’re big points, 300 points a race so like Jamie said, there’s a long way to go.

“He’s been the chaser over the years anyway, it’s where his strong suit is”
